Before beginning, let me just clarrify before the "New Orleans is a shitehole" crowd come to comment, that City Park (despite its name) is NOT under the purview of the City of New Orleans government, gets NO funding from them, and is NOT run by them, and is in fact a state-chartered entity.

City Park currently has two golf courses-- a small, tight, beginner course called Bayou Oaks North and a nice, recently created Bayou Oaks South. Here is an aerial photo with the two courses delineated:

The park is now undertaking a master planning process. This is being done at the behest of a replacement hired after the retirement of longtime CEO Bob Becker. Bob oversaw and orchestrated the Park's rebound and multiple improvements after Katrina. That new replacement, Cara Lambright, is an out-of-towner originally from Dallas. She retained a planning firm out of New York City to undertake this new master plan, and the only local consultant participation is the firm handling public outreach and involvement.

As a planner, I am interested in the goings-on, and attended a public meeting last night. Two major concepts announced were a new "parkway promenade" and a "wooded island". The rendering below shows these improvements on the same area as the existing golf courses shown above:

I noticed that some of these new improvements overlaid and would affect the golf courses. Here is a combo with the improvements overlaid over an aerial photo of the existing situation:

Using that, I did an outline over existing holes affected:

Clearly, this would affect both golf courses, and i finally saw on one of the boards last night, their intent was in plain English for all to see:

This crap is ridiculous.

No. 1, this is being proposed after the number of golf courses in the park has been reduced by half from FOUR courses to TWO in the last twenty years (many old timers on the board may remember the South, East, West and North courses being in place almost up to Katrina).

No. 2, it's being proposed just SEVEN years after the state-of-the-art Bayou Oaks South course was completed in 2017 at a cost of $24.5 million.

No. 3, City Park's golf courses are a SIGNIFICANT moneymaker for the park, which has ALWAYS struggled for funding, in fact it WAS (other than one year) the largest single source of income for the park prior to Katrina. Yet they want the situation to be (as President/CEO herself stated), "We're probably going to have less golf too and return a lot of golf to park land". Which, of course, makes NO money.

Just can't get over how stupid and ridiculous this world has become...

Anything to frick over Mike Rodrigue and his “non profit” I’m ok with. Screw that dude.

I haven’t seen the financials but would be shocked if the south course turns a profit.

There has to be better options for the public than the south course.

Show me where the south course has made money. All the financials I can find online show the golf operations in the red.

The courses make money but not enough to sustain themselves.

My understanding (without reading the OP) is that a plan is being put in place to go from two 36 hole courses (one of which is a shite show), reconfigure the layouts and go to one course similar to what the south course is now

From a golf perspective, I don't have any issue with it but it's grossly inefficient and wasteful being they just spent millions on both courses not than long ago. BUT, when politicians, state and federal officials spend money that isn't theirs they don't really care all that much.

I don’t think it’s the worst idea, except for the potential severe overcrowding of one course.

I like the north course because it gives me the ability to walk a quick 9. I can see why bayou oaks doesn’t want to maintain two courses, especially when one of them is mainly used as a dumping ground for bros to come kill a Saturday afternoon and get hammered.

If done correctly this could be a good thing, but would need more information.

A lot of liberal, white women hate golf because it’s the one time they see their husbands happy.

What they should do, provided the Parkway Promenade and Wooded Island are definites, is turn the North course into a lighted 9 hole facility. Could make it a really cool par 3 course. Use mats for tees to ease maintenance costs.

Improve the greens on the “main course”. They’re boring and unimaginative.

They priced a lot of people out. Cut the price and get more people out there and make more money

Haven't played there in a good while but isn't it packed on Fri-Sunday at the current pricing? Also the lighted 9 hole idea above would be a big plus....so it won't happen.

The amount of improvements the north would require to match the south makes it financially stupid. You can't have a high end golf course with 14-15 holes of 1 style and 3-4 with a completely different style, grass types, green types, etc. There has to be cohesion and that reno would be expensive.

Also love the idea of paying 24M to build a golf course to tear it down a decade later. Epitome of politics.

There is zero chance they do anything to affect the South course. It's too successful
