Friend comes to me at the score board.

“Guy is a 10 supposedly. Shoots 73 in practice round and 38 in first match. I may not play next year.”

I get it, but I only play because my brother loves the event.

I also enjoy matches with guys I know.

However, sandbagging is real. Especially after first 3 or 4 flights.

You have to know what those kinds of tournaments are going in. If you’re there to win and win fairly, you’ve already lost. Like you said, I enjoy them for the matches and to simply play golf in a format I wouldn’t normally play otherwise. That part is really fun.

As long as posting your own scores is a thing, this will never not be the case. If people cheat to win 4 man scrambles for a soft sided cooler they will sure cheat to win a few hundred bucks in shop credit.

Tough to do at club events with members but the only way is to just straight up start DQ'ing people.

This was my favorite event to work as one of the assistant pros at an Atlanta area CC back in the day.

It also was the hardest to work because of this exact reason. The sandbagging was real. Fortunately, a lot of the members brought the same guests each year and we built our own handicap system for them. We also checked with their home club on a regular basis for their handicap and score posting patterns.

Long story short we had a friend of a friend show up with a bogus handicap and win our yearly tournament... left a sour taste and the committee ended up putting some safeguards in place

All most places can do is simply require the guest to have an established handicap. Going beyond that is a little tough especially for the semi-private places with smaller staff and even the larger places that will have a huge tournament. Anyone else who shows up must be a "known" guest who has played with multiple members often. But even then, you have guests (and even members themselves) who are planing to an incorrect hdcp.

The OP made a good point though, if you're in the top couple of flights, that rarely matters.

There's also the safeguard of not allowing more than a specific stroke difference between teammates. In other words, a 20 hdcp can't play to a 20 if he's paired with a 2. You drop him to a 10 or 12.

Handicaps are confusing. I have always heard that a handicap is not what you are shooting, but what your "playing potential" is. I have a GHIN 8.7 (up from a 7.9). I have posted rounds of 83, 86, 73, 88, 80, 74, 86, and 76. My scoring average is suppose to be an 83. That 73 was my all time best and it should/could have been a 71.

I'm 59, in the worst shape of my life and only play 2-3 times a month. Athletic, but not as much as I used to be. The "potential" is there, but golf is a fickle game for me.

I have pride in my game. I am what I am. I'm honest about my score and play to the rules. That's all I can do.

Posting a score doesn't mean much without context. What tees? What was the slope/rating? What was he hdcp from those tees? Did they bump it? Gimmies?

All those could lower a score to something that isn't close to someone's true hdcp.

Exactly,
I had a 10 handicap and shot a 35 on the front nine. I made three birdies but two were chip ins. I hit three of nine greens in regulation. I had a great round scrambling,
Guys we were playing with start talking at the turn and gig under my skin, They completely messed me up and i shot 50 on the back. It went from a big high for me (I had never been under par for 9 holes) to a terrible experience.
I still remember it although it was years ago.

Make people turn in their GHIN number. The club can check them out.

I think this is the reason why the USGA came out and said all posted scores must be attested.

Personally I post scores when I play by myself but only when I know the score is legit and not a round where give myself 6ft par putts.

Yeah everywhere does this now. As long as Joe Blow is entering his own scores on GHIN, his 18 handicap is still going to be bullshite.

When I worked at CCLa, we (the proshop) entered all scores hole by hole. It was a beating, but it was an effort to curb sandbagging.

Obviously, couldn't do anything about the guest handicaps.

The club where I belonged to,if a guy blew away his hcp in the member events, the Pro would make the adjustments to another flight.

That solved a lot of sandbagging amongst the members. Can't do much about the guests.

I play with the same group of 8-10 guys every week and we'll have 2-3 tee times in a row. We just bring the scorecards to the pro and he puts them into our ghin. No real way to sandbag as no one in the group really plays outside of this game.

Obviously guests are a different thing, but all you can really do is have a pro attest the cap

Best way to circumvent, have a play in round.
Put together a 5 hole circuit on the evening before everything kicks off.
Put $1k in a pot, $200 to each flight winner, and have a stroke play event to finalize the flights.
You can play/up down into your flight and prevents some immediate sandbagging

this is the kind of BS that blackballs you at your CC.

With the new system, anyone can check them out. GHIN mobile app allows you to see anyone. For instance, Donald Trump is a 2.5 at Winged Foot and Biden is a 6.7 in Delaware. Jim Nantz is a 10.7.

Your course rating and slope must be fairly low.

From our white tee at 137 and 71.8 your index would be lower than 8.7.

What is the slope, odds of a 10 shooting 73 then 38 is in the hundreds of thousands
