How fast did this happen for you? Was it a slow painful process over years or was there an aha moment at some point with your swing. Picked up the game again during corona and went from being consistently in the 90’s down to the upper 80’s half the time. I am still leaving a lot of Easy basic shots on the course though. Good news is putting game and short game are pretty good which helps a lot so honing the long game and club selection is really what is holding me back. I’m taking lessons and they have made a world of difference but I’m still inconsistent, way too many push shots. Just curious how fast you made the leap.

Inconsistency always feel like a problem even when I shoot in the mid 70s. I look at my card and get mad at 2 doubles even though I had 3 or 4 birdies.

Two things got me over the edge. 1) Changing big misses to small misses. In other words going from a huge slice into some trees or hazard to a small slice where it’s playable to the front of the green. 2) Getting better at recovery shots. This could be from anywhere. Getting a shot from the rough to anywhere on the green. Or missing the green but chipping it close. So don’t compound a mistake but turn it into an easy par or even bogey and move on.

Putting your tee ball in play consistently. It's hard to screw up majorly when sitting in the middle of the fairway. Yes it happens, but outcomes are much much better.

I found that if I focused on:

Hitting fairways with driver, 3w, or hybrid- just find the fairway and

Always hit enough club into the greens.

Frequently gets me near breaking 80...

Driver seems to be my problem. Was fighting a hook, now with lessons I’m fighting a push with all clubs. Hoping to work that out soon as I knew with lessons things would get worse before they got better.

Conservative play with up and downs. Granted my best is 82 right now but have only been playing a couple years.

Quit trying stupid Tiger, Phil and Bubba shots has saved me a lot of strokes. Punch/Bump and run and placing long putts in a good position to tap in vs trying to make 40-50 foot putts and running it 5-10 feet from the hole in a bad spot.

I’ve been playing better courses lately which has really made me understand where my game is. It’s a lot different playing a wide open course like City Park where even if you are left or right you are still sitting in a fairway, even if it’s not your fairway to playing a course like TPC or English turn where if you miss you are wet or in a fairway bunker.

I shoot 88-92 most days now.

Drives are much improved and I rarely 3 putt.

I'm not accurate with my irons so I miss a bunch of greens and then my greenside wedge skills suck, I have no touch and leave myself with a low chance putt.

Played Torrey in March. It's wide open but really makes you appreciate what real "rough" is.

You can be 2 inches off the fairway and your ball is absolutely BURIED. Brutal trying to hit long iron shots out of those lies.

I can only speak for myself but, i think it’s safe to say that anyone who shoots in the 70s is also shooting in the 80s. I’ve shot in the 70s off and on since i picked the game back up 10 years ago. I only play about 7-8 months out of the year so i don’t come out playing well. But, by end of summer I’m shooting consistently in the 70s but i can fire an 88 in a heartbeat. To me that’s part of being just a weekend golfer who’s married with 2 kids. If you’re asking what it takes to shoot in the 70s consistently it’s small misses, hit lots of fairways, no 3 putts, and focus on nothing over a 6. No large numbers. That means learning to take your medicine on holes. When i put up a large number over 18 holes it’s not because I’ve consistently played each hole poorly. It’s because i have 2-3 blow up holes that i have double to triple bogey on.

Getting this fixed is worth 5-8 strokes a round.

Tough to really get reps in though unless you're willing to sit out in the sun or have a setup at home.

Bought a net and a ton of shitty balls and spend a few hours/week chipping/pitching into the net off my deck. Has drastically helped my scores being able to putt close.

Been playing 25-50 rounds/year for 3 years and still haven't chipped in though. Drives me crazy.

My home course REALLY penalizes you for not being in the fairway, you more often than not don't have a shot into the green. The slope rating is about a 135(142 from the tips), makes playing other courses seem easy.

I rarely break 80. I have broken 90 15 of my last 20 rounds.

When I break 80, it’s a surprise.

I’ve broken 40 many, many times on 9, but I rarely put 18 together. Let me know what the secret is.

When I don't have to get the ball up I just use my PW and am actually pretty dangerous with it, I've holed 2 in the last 6 months and lipped out another 3 or so.

Works for a lot of people and I need to try and hone that skill.

Have a buddy that uses an 8 iron exclusively around the greens like you're saying and he's inside 2 feet like clockwork. Shoots in the 70s consistently.

It's definitely not as cool as trying to flop a 64 degree like phil
