Long straight drive, or crisp iron approach shot?

Everyone loves to hit a long drive that splits the fairway, but to me, I get more satisfaction from a crisply hit approach shot that lands softly on the green or spins back a little.
I've hit lots of drives down the middle that have still resulted in plenty of plus scores, but rarely do I hit a green in regulation and end up with worse than par.
What say y'all?

Give me the crisp approach shot all day every day. Even when I'm feeling the driver, it's my second shot where my score suffers the most. I'm just too inconsistent around the greens to have a great score without hitting GIR.

I hear ya. If I could improve my greens in regulation, that would be sweet.

Pure iron shots and it's not close. I've had plenty of below average rounds when I'm driving it well and the ball strikings not there but if I'm hitting the irons well then it's usually a better than average round

It's not just the scoring dividends that it produces, I simply love the actual feel of a crisp iron shot than the clanky feel of a driver.

Yep. A perfect strike on a 6 or 7 iron with the perfect divit and a slight baby draw is a beautiful thing to feel and watch.

In your example, I'll take the iron shot. But a crisp iron shot to get on in 4 doesn't feel nearly as nice as the GIR skull that gets lucky.

That being said, I love the feel of my driver when it is pured so well that you have look down at the tee to reassure yourself that you hit the ball. I love the feeling that the ball "passed through the driver" with almost no feeling. Though the same can be said for a pured iron shot with a forged club, that "check and see" moment is why I keep coming back to golf, even if it is only once or twice a round.

Long drive straight every time.

I can always get up/down from right off the green when my approach is off. I’m not going to score tho if I slice or hook a drive into a hazard.

Just based on satisfaction, and not taking into account which shots generally lead to better scores, I am biased toward the bomb drive.

Nothing beats walking up to your ball on a par 5 and pulling out an 8-9 iron for your approach.

I don’t like questions like this.
If you don’t hit your driver in the fairway you don’t have the chance to hit a crisp iron shot because you’re behind a tree, in deep grass, in a bunker, etc....

So give me the drive, because then I at least have a shot at the good iron shot

For my game I’d take the driver. I actually strike all of my irons exceptionally well. My driver can be so bad at times I leave it in the bag and hit 4i off the tee. I’m a bogey golfer but on good driver days I can shoot low half of 80s. It’s by far the worst part of my game

Doesn’t matter where I hit it with the driver unless the next one is on the green

I used to be much better with my irons.
But I've found something lately with my natural swing and ball placement with my Driver... where it's just "ON".
But I still have trouble shooting low because I'm not sticking it close to the pin.

I'd rather just play a few conservative shots and stick it close to the pin.
