was at Golf Connection yesterday picking up a new 60*. while having the lie adjusted i started hitting all the demo 7 irons they had out. most i hit were around 170 yards, which is what i hit a 7 iron full on average.
however a couple different clubs were pushing 175-180 every time.
i've always known that iron loft differed but i haven't really researched it in a number of years. come to find almost every new iron i look up has stronger lofts by 2-4* than my MP-64's.

what are your thoughts on playing irons with stronger lofts? pros and cons?
i would think achieving even just 5 more yards on a short iron would be very helpful seeing as they are more consistent than longer irons.

could i just have my irons bent down a couple degrees?

I don't care what I play or anyone else plays. Consistent distances and the ability to flight and stop it the way I want are the only things I care about. I laugh when people ask what club I hit after a shot as if the number etched in it matters.

For a guy who hits a 7i 120 or 130 stronger lofts will help him gain the distance he needs. For someone who hits a 7i 170, it hurts us, because you have less options 150 and in.

With the weighting and thin face irons they launch into the outer atmosphere. My 7-pw has strong lofts but I still launch them sky high. Normal lofts and they would go nowhere. It’s all about distance gapping.

Not sure what the loft is on my 6-4 but I hit them normal height compared to my older clubs from 20 years ago.

Some irons go get huge distance. I think that is just marketing to the masses that think longer hitting 8 iron is better.

I don’t worry about the lofts. If you brag you can hit your 27 degree 7i farther than I hit my 35 degree 7i, you’re a dumbass (not you specifically)

at some point, a set of stronger lofted clubs will cause you to hit “less than full” shots, usually approach shots to the green, I would rather hit less lofted clubs at “full” shots than hitting “half or 3/4” shots to the green, requires less muscle memory...

Very good point. Would probably create a problem for me under 135 or so.

Honestly, I have started taking less than driver off the tee when I play shorter courses. It gives me a full iron in instead of trying to knock something down.

I'd find out the carry for every iron and adjust from there. I would think it would be more helpful in the longer irons

I prefer the closer to traditional lofts.

Supposedly the new strong lofts combined with weighting get the ball close to standard height but you lose spin. I like having a lot of spin because I can more attack greens without fear of shooting off the back or landing in front of the green where you are more prone to get bumped off line.

That's just me though. I'm looking for 33-35° 7 irons with a 3.5-4.5° gap up and down from there.

Well, using your same logic, if your longer irons are also longer, say 5-10 yards, then those short irons won't need to be, right?

Like someone else hinted at, you should consider lofts unique to the clubs you are playing. Technically, I guess, you should learn your distances by the loft of your clubs but memorizing the associated club number is much easier.

Mid and long irons spin way less with stronger lofts so holding greens can be an issue, especially from the rough. Also its a pain in the arse gapping wedges when your PW is 44 degrees.

I ask because I know how far people hit their ___ iron.

I just don't hit my longer irons as well as my mid and short range.

I'm a little inconsistant with my 5 and 4 irons. I don't need more clubs in my bag to struggle with..
