If you are not a member of a club. How do you keep a handicap?

A handicap and an index are a little different but both can be kept with apps. 18 birdies is a free app and can keep your handicap and so can garmin golf. If you wanted or needed an index you can register with GHIN yourself through your state's Golf Association.

A lot of public courses will set your handicap up for a fee.

I use The Grint. They have an option to add your USGA Handicap, but didn't want to pay the $50. So instead, I just calculate the average index of the top 8 of my last 20 round. Its close enough.

I use GHIN connected to the Grint to calculate mine, but all you need is Google sheets and the right formulas to keep your own. It's really simple.

Course differential is (Score - Rating) * 113 / Slope. Of course, there is Equitable Stroke control that keeps you from scoring worse than net double bogey on any hole, but that's an added complication.

Then you take your average of your 8 lowest scores. I usually only play games with my close friends. Half of them don't pay to have an official handicap, so I just track their scores in spreadsheet whenever they post something on the Grint.

If you are inputting scores for each hole in the grint, it's not just close enough, it's exactly what your handicap is.

The only thing I would point out is that I have noticed the slope and rating being a bit off on a lot of course I play on the Grint. They have an option to contact the grint to tell them where it is off.

I use GRINT and do not pay. It still tracks your score and hdcp, just not "official GHIN."

Our club makes you play to scratch if you don’t have a GHIN.

For less than $5 a month, it’s just another charge, but IF I was scratch……

You can sign up for GHIN through USGA or your local PGA section most of,the time, I just use the GHIN app on my phone to enter course/ tees and scores
