I find it to be difficult, skating the fine line between trying to get into one’s head and being a dick. With close friends and family, I have no problem making comments after poor shots and razing them.

On the greens I just stfu and and stare. I only talk when spoken to. That seems to work well.

I don’t.

It’s a gentleman’s game. I’m polite and compliment good shots, and I keep my mouth shut on bad shots.

Now if it’s me and my normal playing buddy we’re just out there to have fun and we give each other hell for fun the whole time.

I try to hit good shots and put pressure on them to hit better shots than me.

The second I start thinking about who I'm playing instead of my shot, high numbers follow.

eta- I'll occasionally give a "that'll play" after they hit a shot I know they aren't too happy with.

There is no line. You’re being a dick.

If you have to make rent money on the course, get a new day job. I’m out there to make friends not money. If I cash after a round, I usually buy my friends a beer with their money and talk about how good the beer tastes today.

I ask them before they swing - "Do you breathe in or out while you swing" LOL

Seriously, Hitting a good shot is all that you need to worry about, the game is hard enough.

*Buddy tops one 10 ft in front of us* Me- "Those are the shots that keep us coming back to this game."

I only really play with my close friends, so we constantly jab at each other. That's what makes this game fun to me. When I'm a single that gets paired with others, I'm nothing but polite.

My friends and I mess with each other. Little bit of gamesmanship. If I’m in a real tournament, I’m not going to try and get in someone’s head. I’m focused on my game.

Talking shite to get in someones head when you're playing for money is about as low as it gets on the golf course aside from outright cheating. Play the man straight up and either collect or pay but have some class.

shite talkers tend to be the lesser skilled.

Golf is hard as shite, everyone is out there trying to survive with what they brought to the table.

Not a lot of room for deliberate shite talking.

If I’m playing for fun with my buddies Who are all widely different handicaps, we will talk crazy mad shite to each other. That’s a beer drinking day.

I have a different group that plays for a little money, we try to keep it light, but know we are playing against each other. We all want to win by beating the other guy who is also playing his best. With that group, I want to beat them by shooting +1 and them shooting +2.

In a cash game with a non friend; play well
In a cash game with a friend; slight shite talking and play well.

In a tournament; play well.

And I think there’s a distinction with simply bullshitting with friends and getting in someone’s head. A friend of mine can talk shite to me without getting in my head. And he knows that. And we both know the line between fun banter and being an arse.

Honestly, some of the guys I play with don’t need me or anyone else to get in their head. They’re in their own.

It all depends on who you’re playing against.

We have a core group of about 8 guys that have played golf together for more than 10 years. We have many different individual and team bets which on any given day you may win or lose up to around $50. We “get in your kitchen” and talk shite freely as that is part of what bonds our group. The unofficial motto of our group is “if you need a friend, get a dog.”

Now playing in a tournament or with a different group is a different matter. In those situations, I’m not trying to get in anyone’s head and I offer words of encouragement.

I get loving competition, but you sound like a shite time on the golf course.

hit fairways and greens consistently. consistence will kill someone when they don't think they can get ahead

let your game do the talking. i won't play with someone if they verbally want to talk shite while golfing. i'm there to enjoy a round, not compete with a douche.

Go low.
I have a group of friends I play with and they will try that with each other but not with me. They know I don't play like that and it will not effect me because I don't need help to play like chit. It is funny when they do it and the other person is having a bad day don't want to hear it and leave.
