Seems like a pretty subjective question.

It is subjective. Just wondering what yardage y’all hear/see and say “that’s long”

I would say anything over 6500 yds is considered "long" by the average weekend golfer.

It seems 7000 yd courses are the new minimum standard on the PGA Tour but it used to be considered long. You see a lot of courses playing in the 7200-7400 range on the PGA Tour.

I think Torrey Pines is one of the longer courses and it plays over 7600 yds.

Pebble Beach is still a classic design that typically plays about 6900-7000 yds and is considered a pretty short course these days.

I would consider anything above 7000 long.

I average 265-275 off the tee and I consider anything less than about 7,000 yards to be short.

Multiply the distance you hit a 5 iron by 36, and that tells you the approximate yardage you should be playing. If it's longer than that, it's "long."

I thought it was a 7 iron

6400 seems correct for you Beaver.

For me?

Anything over 6400 feels long.

I like 6000-6250.

I don’t bomb it.
A solid drive is 225, IF I get a great bounce 240.
A drought and a hot summer day, I can get out to 260.

I hit a 7 iron 140 maybe 150 on a great swing.

Play where you enjoy playing.
I’m playing white at 6400 mostly, but I bounce up whenever others want to move up to 6200 or even 5950!

I’ve moved back to 6800 IF it is hot and dry, but not often.

I think location plays a big part of it. Some of the bombers on here aren't doing what they claim at sea level courses

At some point, the longest hitters are going to max out this equation. There aren't many 7500 yard golf courses, so you should just play the back tees wherever you are.

Some of the big hitters I play with are surprised that their scores are not dramatically better on the forward tee.

They tell me the angles change and several holes they have to hit less than driver because of various hazards and such. They do reach more par 5s, but most of the time the scores are only 2 to 3 shots better. They also have 8 or 9 irons into a par 3 or 2 compared to longer clubs from the tips.

Golf is hard. Length is an advantage. Putting, chipping, and pitching well helps everybody.

So MileHighDraw should be playing 9500 yard courses?

Long depends on where you are playing and height of tee boxes but my generic answer would be over 6750. This type of length usually ends up with 180+ par 3s, par 4s in the 400 range and par 5s in the 550+ range. That is a pretty long course for most players.

If you are playing in the elevations of a mountain area with elevated tees, that 6750 may play closer to 6200 or 6300.

There is a course in Panama City that was always considered long but most of the landing areas were sloped back towards you so your drives rolled no where.

My home club plays about 6,600 from the second tees from the back, which is where I play from. I have no interest in anything longer than this. I’m not a long hitter (7 iron 160) so this about the most I will play anywhere.
