I’m actually swinging my driver decently, but as I’ve put more reps into that process, my iron game has slipped.

How do you guys get it all going as far as driver, irons, pitching, putting, etc?

I seem to either drive the ball well, hit irons well, pitch well, or putt well.

I don’t seem to be able to do more than 2 really well at once. I’ll sometimes get 3 out of 4, but my iron game is sucking right now.

Help!

Basically, what drills do you use to improve iron strikes?

I’ve been putting a ball down next to the ball I'm hitting at the range to see where the divot is. I guess golf is just a tease sometimes, but after I finished today, I walked over to the range and ripped an iron right at the flag. Best iron I hit all day.

Most people are aggressive with the driver then try to steer the irons.

Make an aggressive swing with them, with full body rotation to the finish, and see if you see improvement.

The driver and irons require slightly different ball positions but they are NOT 2 different swings. It's hard enough to develop 1 good swing, much less 2.

I’ve done lots of different practice drills, warm ups, stretching routines, breathing techniques, meditation, and mental clarity exercises over the years to prepare for a round of golf.

If I were you I’d try showing up to the range 30-40 minutes before you’re set to tee off, mix pills with alcohol, then smoke medicinal grade marijuana and/or THC oil on the way to #1.

If that doesn’t help, call me and I’ll take ya’ bowling.

Driver up on the ball
Irons are more compression hitting down on ball

I really do enjoy it when guys who can't break 90 solicit advice from guys that can't break 80. This is the grand comedy of TD, replayed time and again.

Come off $60 and let somebody who knows what they're talking about get you pointed in a reasonable direction. Travis Coxe is at Santa Maria. I'm sure he'd be happy to take your sweet moolah.

I'm not sure I follow your analogy, but OK. Do you have something you'd like to say?

I feel your pain man. I've spent a lot of time working on driver slice to get it straight. The result, I hook my irons. Both of my swings are different but part of the effort I make in the drive is to roll my wrist slightly. I'm now fighting the wrist roll out of my irons. It's mostly prevalent on the 5, 6, 7 irons. The 8, 9, and wedge game is more consistent for me.

One of the things I do at the range is spend the first half of the time there working through the progression. Start with wedges and work down in clubs. The second half I spend alternating between driver and random irons every shot. If I hit a bad shot, I hit it again. This seems to help condition my mind to alternating from driver swing to iron swing. I was spending a lot of time straight up going through the progression from wedge and ending on driver and stopping there. I haven't been to the range in a bit but whenever I go to the range the day before a round, I'm usually more consistent with my swings.

For reference, I'm generally around 10-13 handicap. I've hit 80 3 times this summer and can't seem to shave that last damn stroke to officially land in the 70s.

The wrist roll isn’t going to get you there

Your reading comprehension is kinda low here. That was ONE of the things I've changed that has straightened out my drive. There are OTHER factors I've changed as well.

And when I hook my iron shots, I feel my wrist rolling. . . so yes, wrist rolling contributes to the occasional rogue shot.

Any conscious thought regarding hand/wrist movement is never going to be consistent with any club. The face/path ratio will be all over the place

Ok I'll not be a dick and try to learn here.

Can you explain what you mean? When I say I roll my wrists, about 30-40% of my longer iron shots (5, 6, 7) when I make contact, I feel my wrist roll which results in a severe hook. It happens occasionally with the 8 and 9 iron but not as often and not as severe relative to the other irons.

I'm also guilty of delofting the club while setting up for a shot. Probably something I should work on. But it seems to happen at times even when I don't deloft the club.

I can control the ball flight when I focus on keeping my wrists straight through my swing. I'm not intentionally rolling my wrists any. It's when I set up to take a "natural" feeling swing and I fight to keep from rolling any through contact.

Same as my drive, I have to consciously think about certain elements of my swing until they're more natural. So saying any conscious thought about something isn't going to get results doesn't seem to work in my game.

May need to read up on face/path.
