Best public course you've ever played?

My parents sent me some vouchers for Southwest airlines that expire on 6/11. They thought flights had to be booked by that date, but you actually have to travel by that date.
Trying to find a Friday-Sunday or Saturday-Sunday flight to go play somewhere. Have never golfed out in the PNW, so that's intriguing, but open to anything.
I'm a big fan of Muni tracks and courses with old history as I tend to write recaps and document the trips. Would love to do Pasatiempo out in SD, but can't justify the $250 green fee.
Any favorites around the country?

Best public course I've ever played is the Ocean Course at Kiawah. Don't know if that helps you or not though because that wouldn't be cheap.

what’s your green fee budget? Pasatiempo is my answer to best public course I’ve played without a doubt. But it’s in Santa Cruz, not San Diego.
You’re not gonna find many courses that fit your criteria for less than that... history, great
If you can get to Michigan, you could hit up Forest Dunes. There are 2 courses, the second of which is designed to be played backwards and forwards, so you could get three rounds in there. Looks like greens fees in June are around 115.
Arcadia Bluffs is also in Michigan and if you get there before June 3rd it’s $130.
There a new resort in Wisconsin called Sand Valley that’s the same guy that did Bandon. Unfortunately, you just hit their high season, so $225 green fee
Speaking of Wisconsin, you could get a twighlight at either of the 2nd courses in Koehler... Blackwolf Run Meadow Valley or Irish at Whistling Straights for less than $200.
Now, if you want history and value, you could do Southern Pines ($75)... Donald Ross, near Pinehurst, same vibe, but not the same level of refinement.

Super helpful information. Southern Pines sounds like what I'm looking for. I'd like to stay around the $100 range. I know the more well known public tracks will be more than that, but there are muni gems all over the country for less than $100. The hard part is finding them.

There’s a lot of really good ones in Michigan/Midwest in general.
Rustic Canyon out near LA is fantastic as well.

Bryan Park in Greensboro is very nice. 36-holes, funded primarily by an endowment from the Bryan family that donated the land to the city.
Champions Course is a great track that is extremely demanding from the back tees. $54 on weekends, $36 twilight.
Players Course is just what the name suggests. Still a nice setup, but fewer really difficult holes. $52 on weekends, $33 twilight.
Ever find yourself in Greensboro, go check it out.

Nearby, there’s some good courses in the San Antonio hill country, Barton Creek and Wolfdancer close to Austin.

The Sevierville Golf Club just outside of Pigeon Forge... Highlands Course was the better of the two.

Best public? Arcadia Bluffs for me, but with your short window and car travel time frame flying Southwest only I’d play some great golf within 1/2 hour to an hour from Chicago or Denver for a weekend versus driving all over BFE, a lot of the gems out there require a lot of drive time. I would personally fly into Milwaukee or Chicago direct and play Whistling Straits and Erin Hills as they are only 1.5 hours apart and close to MKE if you can find a good flight or 3 hours from Midway in Chicago.

So you get free airfare and don't want to fork over what you saved on travel to play golf? Are you staying at a YMCA too?

Toss up between Sand Hollow Utah and Ventana Canyon in Arizona

This thread has delivered. Some awesome suggestions in here. Definitely adding these to my list regardless of if it's this trip or not.
Any dollar is more than I wanted to fork over. I had zero plans of taking a trip, but don't want to waste the vouchers. If I can make it work, get a cheap car rental, and play a decent course, that makes for a better weekend then getting drunk at home.
