I live close to downtown, and I'm starting to play enough to where I'm looking into joining some kind of country club (or non-public course...I'm really only interested in the golf) rather than trying to squeeze into a public course and pay $100 for fees every time I play.

Any suggestions that are reasonably priced with about a 30-min drive of downtown Houston? I've heard of Northgate...what else is out there?

Interested to hear the responses. I'm tired of paying $40-$50 on a weekend morning to play over 4 hour rounds on goat ranches with hackers.

I was a member there from 2012-2014

Northgate has 27 holes and we had reciprocal @ Walden on Lake Conroe

I worked off of 1960 & lived in The Woodlands so it was convienent for me.

I have an in at Sterling CC (Houston National) which would get me full membership and waive my initiation fee as well. However, it's quite a haul considering I live off Washington inside the loop. I can't justify 5ish rounds a month at the same club 45 minutes away to make it worthwhile. All the other clubs close in (Braeburn, River Oaks, HCC, etc) are insanely expensive as well....I'm interested in other peoples solutions, getting pretty tired of the munis in town.

I was a member at Northgate from 2013-2016. It was good for what it was: a cheap club with 3 nine hole courses. I live north of the Heights, so a 25 minute drive was pretty nice. However, after the Labor Day flooding in 2016, ownership decided to reduce the track from 27 down to 24 (if I remember correctly). I dropped when this decision was made.

Recently joined at Pine Forest. More expensive than Northgate, but is far superior in every way.

Do a ClupCorp course(Kingwood, Bay Oaks) or Pine Forest (a few of us on here are at Pine Forest).

I lived downtown when I joined Pine Forest but worked in the energy corridor so it was easy for me.

I know a lot of guys are out at Riverbend CC, they have a ton of members though so getting a good tee time on the weekends is usually a crap shoot. I'm out at Sugar Creek CC and its fairly reasonable. I work/live around Bellaire so hopping on 59 to get out there or get back isn't a hassle at all.

I know it's not private, but how much is it to join Wildcat? Benefits to being a member?

Kingwood Country club is ~30 minutes form downtown, club corp and recently underwater so you could probably get a good deal.

72 holes of golf, 300/month for under 40 year olds

I wouldn't be in a rush at the moment.

There will be a lot of people dropping memberships because of house flooding and not having the discretionary funds to keep up a membership.

Many clubs will be offering discounts to get in new members in the next few weeks.

Due to the very unfortunate storm we all endured, We are working on a Harvey Recovery Incentive that has very reduced initiation fees as well as a charity component. We are still finalizing some of the details but this is what I can confirm. They have approved a limited number of memberships at 50% off the Initiation Fees in every category of Membership through September 31st. The savings for our Full Golf Equity Membership is $2500….. Plus, I will offer you 4 golf guest passes so you can begin showing off your new club immediately and complimentary dues until December 1st. And we are also working on taking a portion of your initiation fee and donating it directly to a Recovery Charity. (this is what we are still finalizing….most likely $500)

Our Monthly Dues are very competitive in the area and we do not add additional expenses on top. Our Full Golf Equity Dues are $499 plus a $60 capital improvement fee…. Totaling $559 plus tax. No service charge, no minimums, no range fee! The capital improvement fee is what guarantees that a portion of your monthly spend is going directly towards the improvement of your club. We also have memberships for golfers under 35, tennis and social. Please let me know if one of these categories better suites your needs.

Sorry just seeing this, but yeah that's about right. I joined as a junior member a little over 3 years ago and they gave me 3 months free of dues, so you could probably get more out of them if you hold out a month or so once people who flooded start dropping. Dues went from $290/mo as a junior member to $490/mo since I turned 30. My company pays for the dues portion of my bill every month, so that helps. I usually pay between $300-$400/mo depending how much I play and eat/drink out there.

I played yesterday and the course is surprisingly in great shape. The bunkers are the only thing that took a beating by the flooding, which is expected I guess.

Jumping back on this thread ... OP did you ever make a decision? I was wondering if anyone had any follow ups.

Miller Man, I have a couple of buddies who are members at Sugar Creek. I have been teetering with the idea of joining for nearly three years. We have finally decided to pull the trigger on joining "a" club. Called the membership lady this and we are meeting her next week.

My other option is Pine Forrest which a few people have suggested to me. I have never played there. Apparently it is similar pricing. I live in the Heights but I work at I 10 and Gessner. It would be a quick shot for me to jump out to Pine Forrest for nine holes in the afternoon. Plus they have a really nice pool and fitness center that the wife may like.

Looking for $1500 or less initiation and $500 or less on dues.

We just got new upgraded sand at Pine Forest due to Harvey, its the good crushed Arkansas stuff. Not sure what the current initiation fee is but they did recently do a special that dropped it to $500 for under 42. Might be back to the $3k now.

Jill? Sugar Creek is great for what it is. If you want some more info, millermantd@gmail is my email on here. I’d love to know who your buddies are, there’s a good chance either my brother or I know them. There’s a real good group of younger guys (30’s) out there.

I'm in Oak Forest and joined PFCC last summer. They had a HUGE initiation special going. Typical fee is $3,000, but for the month of May it was down to $500...
