As many of you know, I recently purchased Sub70 699 pro irons. It has been game changing for me. I love hitting irons again. My 4i goes 215-220 off the tee and comfortably 210-215 off the deck. I love hitting it.

My fairway woods are about to be needing replacement, so it got me thinking: maybe a 3 UDI would be a nice fit.

My 5W goes 235 with a draw, but I can lose it left at times. I've always been 5W guy. I don't care for hybrids. I hook the hell out of them.

So, lets discuss. It doesn't have to be all about me and my situation.

What do you swing? Why? pros/cons?

Get a 5 wood and a driving iron. I carry the driving iron when you need something short and low off the tee and carry the 5 wood when there are moderate length par 5s.

I use the driving iron a lot here in the Texas summers when fairways have a lot of bounce and the 5 wood more in the spring and fall when it's more carry

I'm with Mingo on this. I don't carry a FW - I have a 2H (adjusted to 16 deg) and 3H that's 19. Both have the launch characteristics I want and I found the 2H much easier to hit off the deck than a 3W. Both are PXG as they are the best hybrids I've ever hit (for my swing) and I've tried almost all of them - mainly because I can set them at 2 degrees flat and it mitigates that draw bias that are typical of hybrids.

I hit both the Titleist TSR 5W and 7W and the TM Stealth 5W and 7W this weekend at our demos at the club. Both were fantastic fairway metals but they launch super high and just drop out of the sky. That's great for a long carry and approaches into greens. I hit the TM Stealth 2 and 3 UDI and DHY as well - low launching bullets. Nice clubs and relatively easy to hit (although the 790 2 UDI was not wonderful on slight mishits - I preferred the Stealth much more).

The right answer I guess would be based on course conditions and what your typical needs are at your course.

Chappy, let me save you some aggravation.

Order a PXG 0211 7 wood OR find Ping 400 series 7 wood and have the shaft built to 4 wood length (43) which is very important.

Extra shaft length will give you extra distance while still hitting it high and landing soft. Play it in the back of your stance and hit a medium stinger.

Excellent out of the rough andcan evenchip with it out of a bad lie.

If you have to have a hybrid, I have owned them all and the best is the PXG XF Model, really long and it won't hook.

Hitting it high is not a problem for me. I hit my 5i higher than lost people can hit a 9.

Lengthening a 7W is an interesting idea though.

Out of the rough, I would rather hit an iron. Even if I am laying up and hitting another wedge in, I think that's a better option than trying to hit it 200+ out of the rough.

Conventual wisdom would suggest that this is a great idea. However, I am a bit of a head case. I need to pick one and commit. I went thought this with my 4UDI and 4H with my last set. It was terrible.

That's how most courses are around Lafayette. My home course is hard as a rock 95% of the year. I think the 3UDI is a great option for me right now, but I've always been a 5W guy. I may get the 3UDI while my current 5W still works.

I've seen you hit irons. Think a driving iron would be great for you.

My tallest iron is a 4i I carry 200yds, then 18° 2H I carry 215-220. I only carry 2 woods, 10.5° Driver(250-265)& 15° 3wd(235 carry).

I play the Sub 70 699 Pros also. I had 5 iron thru PW plus 3 Sub 70 JB wedges,
PXG Driver and Sub 70 949X 4 wood(16.5). Had a large gap between the 5 iron and 4 wood, just purchased a Sub 70 949X 7 wood(21.0) and a 699 4 utility. Gaps are much better now.

I would have given that club for free this summer, finally gave it to the First Tee.

My 7 wood out of the rough 200 yards out is like cheating, it is so easy to do.

Ill give PXG a look.

I can’t stand the look or anything about a hybrid. I grew up playing 2 irons that we learned to hit off the tee and fairways. So I’m a bit more old school with this and i go from 3 wood to 3 udi. I fly my 3 wood about 275-285 on avg and my 3 iron off the tee is about 250. I get a bit of gapping issues there but i rarely have that type of distance into a green. If anything id have 5 wood to 3 iron and take out a wedge but i like having 4 wedges as most amateurs hit more wedges than anything else.

699 4 utility. Hit that and the 7 wood yesterday, both very easy to hit. Went with the 699 instead of the Pro, slightly larger face. I was in the PGA Club Pro for 31 years, I think the Sub 70 Brand is just as good if not better than all the other Golf manufacturers. Other brands just spend more money advertising and changing models every year. I you want to save money and have a top line club, give Sub 70 a try.

I carry driver, 3,5,7 woods
6-9 iron
4 wedges
A putter

And believe it or not a 6 hybrid.

I’m not a big hitter, but I really strike my FWs good.

My favorite is the 5 wood. TM M2 21 degrees.

Many 5 woods now are 18 degrees or even less.

I look at clubs and it seems each year the shafts lengthen and the lofts get stronger.

I tried about 6 different hybrids before giving up on them for good. I went to a 5w and 7w setup. My 5w distance is similar to yours at 235, and the 7w is about 220, with the 4i fitting nicely at 205. The only drawback to the 7w is there’s really no controlling the height off the tee. If it’s not into the wind, it flies high and true, but if I need to hit a low one, I have to drop to the 4i or go up to the 5 wood and hit something low and driving. It’s really making me consider the UDI. I’ve never hit one, but I hit my irons consistently, and am interested in what it can do.

I use to setup with a hybrid like a FW, but I improved by setting up with a hybrid like an iron.

You probably already knew that, but I did not when I first started with a hybrid.

My next set I may look at hybrids for a majority of the set. Tour Edge and Cleveland have sets with hybrids through the set.

I've played 4w/7w all season but recently switched to 3w/7w. The setup is more tailored to shots I encounter on my home course. Need the 3W for some extra length off the tee at times and to reach a couple par 5s. 7w is perfect for 215 to 225 yard shots I encounter on several holes to come in high and land soft.

I have a 5w that hasn't seen the course all season and probably won't anytime soon.
