Well depends on the shot I’m trying to hit, wind and other conditions. Not to mention if I have to force a draw or fade it al depends. Because I have a few clubs I could hit that number with depending on the shot characteristics.
Perfect conditions dead straight shot ,it’s a 6iron..

Dang we got some bombers in here…or spec’d down lofts.
It was a 1 or 2 iron for Ben Hogan.
It’s a 4H, hopefully high and soft, for me.

Lofts have definitely changed over the years and so have shaft lengths.
Ping has 42 degree PW as stock.
Mine is 45 degrees. That’s a full club difference in loft. Im not a big hitter by any definition and I carry 4 wedges.
Do some of the biggest hitters carry 5 wedges?
I don’t doubt there are many who are great ball strikers, but some of the distance is modern technology and specifications.
The reason many standard iron sets are 6 through P is that the newest 5 irons look more like 3 irons from the 1980s as far as length and loft.

Well, that's 2 shots for me at 65yo. 5w, then a short pitch/wedge and one put for a solid 4.

6, 7, or 7 wood. Depends on the shot and how I’m striking the ball that day.

You have to give me more info. With the wind? Against the wind? Better to be long? Better to be short?

Back pin-7 iron
Front or middle-6 iron
Right in the middle of clubs for me

Old man 7w or a nuked 5 iron for my old arse

Depends on the green size, shape, bunkers, and elevation. If flat and able to run up, hard 4 iron otherwise a 5W for me. If I had a 7W in the bag that would be my choice.
