XBOX Series X or Playstation 5

My xbone crashed on me a few weeks ago. My son turned it off during an update and essentially bricked it. What is the better console?

Depends on a couple of things first and most is if you/your son plays with friends, then it depends on where they play.
PS5 is probably a better bet today than xbox based on games that are ready to play now. But xbox has serious momentum and I think through the course of this generation (next 6 years) they will be relatively equal or xbox will pass ps5 in terms of the better console.
-If you would do gamepass, its without a doubt better than anything ps5 is doing or is planning on doing, but its a monthly subscription that you may not want to pay for.
-Xbox seems to be a more consumer friendly platform right now allowing free upgrades from last gen to this gen and by having a far superior backwards compatible program.
-PS5 does have a showcase tomorrow where they are announcing things, will be interesting to see what they say.

PC is the best option, you even get access to Xbox games and a few playstation, and Sony is likely to add more to Steam over time.

Series X for Gamepass.
I own both and have yet to buy a game for the PS5.
The PS5 is basically my God of War/Horizon/Ghost of Tsushima machine.

PS5 but the Series X should be nice in at the end of the year when their exclusives start hitting and Gamepass.
Would get a PC though to cover the Xbox side and get an occasional Playstation game.

Game pass is an awesome deal. All comes down to what you want to play. Both are great consoles.

It sounds like you had a Xbox, so getting the Series X would make sense if you want to continue playing whatever games you own already and persist whatever work you have within that ecosystem.
If you are wanting to take a moment to play games from the other side of the world, PS5 would be the option.

God of War, Spiderman, Last of Us, Horizon, Ghost, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank. Plenty of high quality offerings from US and European studios. Sony doesn't just have JRPGs
KOTOR remake, Wolverine, and other great stuff in the pipeline as well.
