So clever of them not to post what the actual price is going to be on 8/1/26 in that announcement

For those keeping score at home:

Xbox Series S 512GB: $399 --> $499
Xbox Series S 1TB: $449 --> $599
Xbox Series X 1TB: $649 --> $800
Xbox Series X 1TB Digital: $599 --> $750

I’d expect Sony to follow soon. Gaming in general, but especially console gaming is on life support.

If they expect "another doubling" of console storage and memory prices by Fall 2027, PS6 and Helix are easily going to be $1000+. The question is, how high will they go? $1,250? $1,500?

Why would anyone buy a Series S for $599 when a PS5 Digital is also $599?

This is actually the 2nd time Microsoft has raised prices. Sony will likely follow with their 2nd price increase soon.

Last Christmas saw the lowest console sales in 20 years and this years will be worse, much worse.

ETA: When supply can't meet demand, prices must increase.

It’s almost like Microsoft and Sony are begging for horrible console sales now. About every 6-8 months or so they keep wanting to jack the prices up on their consoles. I’m guessing soon they are hoping they can get the price out of range of the majority of their buyers budgets.

Oh who am I kidding there will still be tons of people willing to go in debt over their eyeballs and still pay $2,000 for a PlayStation or Xbox console lol.

Trust me, they dont want to This is a result of historically poor market conditions for select components

I think we are too late into the console life cycle for GTA6 to drive demand anymore.

Mostly because anyone that excited for GTA6 almost certainly HAS a current gen console already I would think.

GTA6 def would have been a major system mover had it come out earlier in the life cycle.

Another reason consoles have traditionally dropped in price as they age is not only because the tech got cheaper but also to reach people who have been sitting on the fence lukewarm about it.

You're now asking someone who has passed on a PS5 for like 6 years to suddenly buy one at the highest price its ever been.

Absolutely. They know these rising prices are killing their sales, but they have no choice. It's just a really, really terrible time to be selling gaming hardware.

Only sorta related, but felt is was appropriate to the thread:

Microsoft whiffed on a lot this generation, but requiring proprietary SSD expansion cards is one of the dumbest things they did.

In 2013 GTA 5 did help move 7th gen console sales ..even with the 8th gen only a couple months away from launching. But they bundled those 7th gen consoles with GTA 5 and good sales on the consoles. Now, with prices increasing like they are who knows. I bet it still drives some sales .
