Chances are if you have a shitty ISP you have shitty internet.

What's so different about having in game content delivered to you if you have a good connection vs playing on a dedicated server now?

When you play now the dedicated server is constantly sending you info of where players, vehicles, etc are and you are sending back packets of info of where you are. If you have a bad connection even now you will lag and have issues.

It will still be pushing packets to you just now those packets will contain say some pre-rendered areas of a map.

No offense but I trust that engineers will have this better figured out than you or I.

They will know what they can and can't push to you. What they can't push to you will be rendered on the system.

Where have you been? We've needed this insight.

So the word "experience" is weird to me now...

Content is pretty strange as well.

I Gamefly almost every single game. I couldn't even tell you the last time I paid full price for a game and have no intentions do so. Rent Far Cry 3, beat in about 4 days, sent back, AC3, same thing, rented CoD for a month, sent back. Why would anyone pay $60 for a game when you can rent it for 15 a month and in that time play and beat 3 new release titles that would cost you $180?

Right. I think Xbox with the check in once per day online and cloud stuff is saying get with 2013 and get good internet. It will alienate some people obviously but as a company they aren't going to stop moving forward because of one demographic.

They also know that if you don't have good internet then you probably won't find the Xbox One appealing nor will they make as much money off of you because they make a ton off of digital media now and that will only increase.

They are going to an all digital format by the end of this console I bet and this is all just the ground work for that.

you have any idea how many people still use DSL for internet? this is an idiotic attitude to have.

the tech at the two ends of the chain (the box, and the data center) are amazing. titanium/tungsten steel/whatever analogy you want to use.
but the tech in the middle - shite thats definitely not steel. aluminum maybe. in some places bubble gum and bailing wire.

its a chain, and its only as strong as its weakest link. i see the problems that can take place in this chain on a daily basis - and i wouldnt want to rely on the cloud for anything like this if i didnt have a really good ISP. that may not be a problem for you or I, but it will be for millions of americans. for those people, the PS4 is clearly a better choice. Xhox has effectively tech'd themselves out of a swath of the market. not smart. not smart at all.

i guess since in every class there are a couple of "slow" kids, the teachers should just stop teaching new concepts to the rest of the class.

Microsoft, the cloud is a terrible idea. what about all the poor people? shut it down. cancel the project completely.

But to stout's point, the swath of the market they are alienating themselves from--is that really all that big of a loss considering the swath they are appealing to?

You realize there are people who just live in areas where they can't get decent internet connection.........and they aren't poor? I know you think every should move to the city just because, but quit being dumb.

That being said, that demographic won't put a dent in MS's sales, so I honestly have no problem with their approach.

the PS4 and Xbox will be close to equals to any household with good internet. lets say they split that market at the same rate the previous gen split.

the market without good internet, well that should go overwhelmingly to PS4 - especially if they did any research at all.

the tech isnt a bad idea, its just a lot of the market isnt capable of using it yet, and that isnt because of learning curve or costs - its because of an outside entity that M$ has no control over - ISPs.

Sony bought a cloud gaming service and by all indications it will be a huge part of the PS4. They have hinted at it though they haven't shared their exact plan yet.

I have DSL and I will use this as and example of what you don't grasp.

3 games I play a lot on Steam...Killing Floor, Trouble in Terroirst Town on Garry's Mod, and The Hidden which is a Half Life 2 mod.

All of those games the only content for them on my PC are the models. The modded files allow for the server you join to host the map and other content. Each time the server switches maps there is a brief second for everyone as it downloads the pre rendered map temporarily onto your PC. I have never had any issues with any of those games.

This also has allowed people who host servers to build their own custom maps and to play them you don't have to go on the net and download a shite load of map packs. Obviously this won't happen on console but I am just using it as an example of potential devs have.

I imagine the cloud will function a lot like that.

my family owns a large hunting camp 10 miles from Liberty, Mississippi. were talking deep deep in the fricking woods.

last year they had a satellite put in for cable and internet. i setup the wireless network for them.

this camp is 10 miles from a gas station, 45 from a hosptial, 45 minutes from a fast food joint, and in my opinion an hour and a half from anything i would consider civilization.

i can't even get AT&T cell service out there.

this isn't 2000. if you have the need and the money. it can happen.

but the discussion we are having is about how Xbox will use cloud processing power to make up for a gap in processing power on the unit itself. in that case, what the PS4 does is irrelevant because it already has the lead in processing power.

this isnt a discussion about latency/lag. if you use dsl and play a game effected by lag you are playing at your own risk, regardless of hardware. we all know that.

Xbox doesn't care about those people though. They don't make money off of those people. At least not to the degree they do off of people that buy movies, use Netflix on their device, buy DLC, etc.

Given that a console is usually a loss leader at first, I doubt MS cares to have a large group of people that it will take longer to turn a profit on. Game licensing doesn't make the sort of profits Xbox Live does. They have made over a billion dollars off of for like 3 years in a row now.

More apps on Xbox One and you spending more time on Xbox One (which is why they want you to use it for everything including your live TV) means there are chances you will spend more money on Xbox Live.
