Why did the Dreamcast die?

Seems to get a lot of love from everyone I've ever talked to.
So, what happened to it? Bad marketing? Horrible sales setup? Just too much competition?

I think it was the competition. When it first came out I believe it did very well.

Marketing.
Sony piggy bank and Microsoft piggy bank >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Sega piggy bank
Microsoft came in to the game prepared to lose billions if that is what it took to gain market share.
Also the Playstation was so successful that Sony and the PS2 had so much momentum that there was no way they weren't going to be number one in the generation.

I heard the reason why is because Sega kept releasing different type of systems too often and people quit supporting them because of this. I saw this in a video. They were talking about how they had Genesis, the Sega CD, 32X, Saturn and they completly dropped support for them in a short period of time. And then the Dreamcast came along and people were already fed up with Sega.

lack of 3rd party support
This is a main reason. # of EA titles released for the Dreamcast: 0. Without titles like Madden it made a lot of consumers go for the PS2. Sega Sports games were simply ok. The majority of the Dreamcast's better games were 1st party (Sonic Adventure, Phantasy Star Online, Samba de Amigo; even the more experimental games were mostly Sega (Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Space Channel 5)). Beyond that, third party support was relatively weak. Add Microsoft to the mix (which was bound to dominate the online market) and the Dreamcast lost its niche.
It was a revolutionary system though, well ahead of its time. There was nothing like jumping on PSO and taking out Dark Falz with 3 other super nerds.

And by people I mean game developers.

EA signed an exclusive contract with Sony for next generation games, effectively killing the Dreamcast's 3rd party support. Once EA left them out to dry, the rest of the bitches followed. frick EA.

I never actually owned one. Had friends who did. Anyone else remember those little memory cards that you put in the controller? Those were awesome!

I think I still have one and controllers in a bag in the attic.

plus the fact that it was so easy to burn games probably hurt sales
