Why are the Demons Souls/Dark Souls games so highly regarded?

Is it because of the difficulty?

Great story?

Fantastic gameplay?

I have yet to play any of them but have always wanted to.

I don't know, I think they were horrible games and I wasted my money.

Gameplay
Environments
Difficult but rewarding. Not just mindless Difficulty.
Nothing else really like it.

I would not say it is because of the story. It is not even there unless you go looking for it.

It's difficult without being cheap. The story is whatever, vague motivation to go places and tackle the different challenges.

They're fun, challenging, and have a few innovative features not seen in most games.

Do I need to start with Demons Souls first?

No, you can start with any of them. Lots of people think Demons Souls and the first Dark Souls are better than 2 though.

The difficulty is often greatly exaggerated; it can be tough going at first until you level up and upgrade your weapons a bit, but there are crazy OP weapons/spells in all of the games.

For me, it's just different. I love the worlds, the lore, bosses, enviroments and building characters. It also doesn't try to be something it's not -- it doesn't inundate you with dialogue or cutscenes -- you play the game and not the other way around.

I had picked up Demon's Souls for the PS3 on the cheap a long time ago. Gave it a try once or twice, thought it was horrible. Picked up Dark Souls for free on 360 for the games with gold a few months ago, did the same thing. Friend kept urging me to give it a chance a few weeks after, booted it up and beat it.

Probably one of the most rewarding games you can play through. Finally saw what that hype train was all about.

Dark Souls 1 level design and combat is simply incredible. If you apply DSfix to the PC game the graphics blow me away as well. I consider it a masterpiece along the lines of Zelda Ocarina of Time, Baldur's Gate, Everquest, etc. Certain video game directors are just better than others. Hidetaka Miyazaki is elite, near Shigeru Miyamoto level.

Miyamoto of today is not the Miyamoto of the past. In the past decade, he's had a meaningful impact on four games: Steel Diver, Wii Music, Wii Fit, and Super Mario Galaxy. One out of 4 ain't so bad I guess.

He has a few unreleased projects, but they look like crap.

Before you dethrone him he still has influence on every game today with his great work from the 80's and we may not even have video games if not for him. It certainly wouldn't be the same.

I own Dark but not Deamon, I REALLY wanted to play this game but without key mapping I couldn't play it. I was just kidding about them sucking, I am sure I would love them if I could play them.

The online aspect is awesome. It's cool how you can watch other players fight and die at the exact same spot you are standing.
