re: Why are the Demons Souls/Dark Souls games so highly regarded?

Miyamoto of today is not the Miyamoto of the past. In the past decade, he's had a meaningful impact on four games: Steel Diver, Wii Music, Wii Fit, and Super Mario Galaxy. One out of 4 ain't so bad I guess.
He has a few unreleased projects, but they look like crap.
If it's the former, Hidetaka Miyazaki's career doesn't even compare. Maybe it will one day, but it's too soon to say.
If it's the later, Shigeru Miyamoto's supposed ineptness also condemns Hidetaka Miyazaki. It would be an insult to say "Hidetaka Miyazaki is almost as good as Shigeru Miyamoto" in this context.
Regardless, I'm not trying to derail the Soul's games love-fest. I really want to try them out soon. That statement just seemed hyperbolic to me.

Hidetaka Miyazaki is elite, near Shigeru Miyamoto level.
I'm sure the Souls games are great...but come on now. Really??
Well, the main word in my statement was "near"
I still hold Miyamoto at the top because he was the father of 3D gaming. You can see his influence on Miyazaki by the "Z" targeting alone. I was simply saying that his game and level design is one of the best in the industry today in my humble opinion. He may not have the quantity yet but the quality is there.

Can you use a 360 controller?
I have one but can't get used to controlling movement and camera separately, and to a certain extent I have the same issue with a controller, I have no feeling in the thumb and first two fingers on my left hand.

But hey, we're all prone to our biases and fandom. I think Jonathan Blow's a genius and he's only released 1 game.

People enjoy bragging about playing "hard" games

Welp, I've been meaning to play Braid, guess I will buy it next sale.
And really, I think someone can be a genius with only one game, or maybe they just got lucky. Ha!

JombieZombie pretty much nails it. I'll go ahead and toss in the communal effect. From straight up co-op to pvp, in general the entire Souls community is just awesome.

Regarding ds1, what hooked me was:
The challenge
Environment / world.
They basically drop you in the middle and say have at it. The game tells you nothing
Lore is expansive and deep yet really hidden.
Boss fights are unique and challenging.
Loot upgrades are not easy to get yet worthwhile
Pvp system is great.
Combat mechanics are crisp. A lot of builds are viable. It all comes down to skill. If you died it's because you fricked up.

Yeah..check corners
You die and respawn a lot. You just have to not frick up at the same spot next time, basically. Move on 20 feet and get ambushed again. Rinse and repeat until a checkpoint ( which there aren't many of)

Because it was the first well-done game in a while that gave hardcore gamers what they wanted. Dumped them in the middle of an area with zero hand-holding in a sandbox environment and said "go play". It's also extremely punishing. If you make a mistake, it often ends in death.

How good can a game be if you can beat it in 1:45.
