watching and comparing your life bars with the life bars of the boss in any ninja gaiden as you slashed away at him or through ninja stars was stressful as hell.

The Ferris Wheel level
on the hardest level
basically had to set yourself up trapped behind the bumper cars to funnel them back to you

I think I had to do it over 100 times and it spanned several weeks on the second to hardest level before I beat it. I drank heavily afterward.

yes, that one took forever to beat on the highest difficulty.
also, MF'ing Top Gun on NES.
i could never land those damn planes on the aircraft carriers, never. shite was stupid.

I got another one. Super Mario 3 on the NES. Damn level on world 8 where you had to jump from flying platform to flying platform while dodging fire and damn ninja stars. shite used to piss me off to no end. Still one of the greatest Mario games ever made though.

I don't know of a specific level. But all I can say is thank god we can save games these days.
Can't tell you how many times I was playing a game like sonic 2 and that bitch would freeze mid way through.

Gran Turismo license tests.
Also, a few of the Battletoads levels were pretty tough back in the day.
Original Zelda was pretty tricky at some points. I think I tried playing it recently and forget everything, and just quit.
I don't think I ever beat that Ninja Gaiden guy up in the sky on those Coliseum-like towers.

The Turbo Tunnel in Battletoads is the end-all, be-all difficult level. I can't even begin to describe the celebration when I finally beat that level. I tried it again recently and it can still humble me. The level where you have to go rafting down a river was frustrating as well, if I remember correctly. I only got there once or twice due to aforementioned Turbo Tunnel of Despair.
I, too, hated the Water Temple in Ocarina of Time. I rarely need a walkthrough to get through stuff like that, but I can recall pausing a few times in order to go online and get a hint on what to do next.

i could do it about 30% of the time
did anyone always fly straight up during the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th missions, so the shite on the ground or sea couldnt hit you
it was boring as frick, but it almost guaranteed you wouldnt get shot

The level on GI:Joe on NES, where they throw boulders at you as you climb up to the boss, this was a bitch.

This is probably the hardest level I ever played. I finally found a way to get through it, I just layed prone in the ticket booth and the grenades wouldn't harm me. I would just shoot the soldiers as they came by.
