I am a new player and starting for the first time. There's like 15 to choose from and I don't want to pick a dud that I end up putting 50+ hours into. Which ones are good to pick?

Keep it simple, pick Nord.

There's a description of each race on the character creator screen that gives you a rundown on each one.

sorry to piggyback on your thread, but are the newer versions worth it? I've been thinking of playing another run, and I just have the original steam version

Khajiit

You get night eye to see in dark caves and if you’re playing on survival mode, you get extra warmth from your fur and can eat raw food

However, POS racist nords will hurl slurs at you like “milk drinker”

So he should probably go Nord.

Dark elf

Also don’t become an archer. It’s going to ruin everything

You’ll end up as a stealth archer no matter what so why does it matter

Literally me for the past however many years since Skyrim release.

I don’t even play it anymore because it all ends the same way

I started a new play-through recently as a mage

I’ve had to fight the urge to to go archer like Frodo fights the ring

I have yet to have any Skyrim playthrough where I didn't eventually pick up a bow and start sneaking around.

It's like a moth to the flame with me.

Edit: Should have kept scrolling. Pretty much exactly what Sicboy posted.

it really doesn't matter what race you choose honestly.

I do like using a skillcapper mod so my skills max out at 50 except for the 6 race specific skills (which I set a 150 cap for). Makes each race feel way more unique.

I read them and had trouble deciding on a few.
Argonian sounds neat that you can access the swamp and swim underwater, but it’s a little niche so I wasn’t sold.

Imperial was another race that appeared solid. I like the destruction/restoration/enchanting skills combo and the influencing type ability.

What is it about Nord that everyone says it is a good race to start with?

It’s an easy, middle of the road, human race which happens to be the majority culture of this particular ES game. Great pick for a first playthrough.

I guess I'm an outlier, I have a crossbow but the only time I ever use it is on Giants. My follower usually takes care of bandits, etc on ledges with hers for me. But I also haven't done the thieves guild or dark brotherhood so I haven't had to learn stealth too much yet.

And I went Nord first time, mainly because I had no idea what I was doing lol, and it was the closest to looking like me

Every playthrough, bow out while I'm sneaking, when it hits the fan, one handed weapon in the right hand, destruction spell in the left.

I played as an Imperial for my first playthrough and don't have any complaints. Like the others, I used sneak and the bow when exploring crypts; I switched to a one handed weapon and a shield when in actual combat.
