I see FPS by the dozen now yet they all do the same thing. However I also seen story driven FPS like HALO get their story discarded and people just load straight up to multi-player.
Which one is more important to the FPS genre?

Goldeneye was also originally designed as a single player game. The multiplayer was an afterthought.. but it turned out to be awesome. We're also dealing with a much different breed of multiplayer than Goldeneye..

Exactly.
There is only so much data you can put on a disc.
You have to choose a focus, because most of your space will be consumed by the hottest new graphics.
Because, sadly, that is the gamer's primary hook.

It is an interesting debate, because how much story can be put in terms of "solved by shooting everyone". RAGE tried to bridge that gap but came up short.

Story. I hardly play online. Most campaigns are not worth $60 since the money is in multiplayer now. I think Halo had about 12-15 hours of game play. Now you get about 6-8 hours it seems.

Why not a single player FPS?
Would that just not sell?

Half Life 2 and Bioshock come to mind.

I guess I'll have to look into those

Both have amazing stories. Get the Orange Box for HL2. You'll also get the 2 extra episodes, Team Fortress 2, and Portal.

You mean to tell me that FPS games have a single player mode called Story?
In all seriousness, I can't remember the last time I played an FPS for the story. I would probably have to go back to Call of Duty Black Ops. I only played the story on it because I was deployed and didn't have internet access in the middle of the desert.

Just the way it's become. I remember with COD2 and 3, and even 4, I loved the campaigns, and for 2 & 3, that's all I really cared about for a while. The MP was just icing. When XBL and PSN came into existence, competitive MP just for PC anymore. Market opened up, and developers have tapped it many times over.

I grew up playing FPSs for their campaigns. As The halos came out, more and more games were mixing a good story with good multiplayer. This was my favorite time for gaming. So I would have to say I think they both can be important to an FPS.
Now the COD franchise has completely ruined any sort of balance that was previously created. I don't hide the fact that I despise the COD franchise for completely fricking up the FPS genre.

I have mw3 set to open up to multiplayer automatically, I literally forgot there was a story mode

I like both but as a selling point the mp has to be top notch since thats all the replayability.
