Gaming used to be dominated by middle class male youth and it was like that for a long time. What caused the shift in demographics?

Girls figured out gaming is fun You almost seemed pissed about it.

And that's the problem, people (like yourself) will look at that 55/45 stat then try to make the next Halo, GTA, WoW, etc. with that in mind then scratch their heads in confusion when the numbers still come in with males being ~3/4 of their customer base.
I still can't believe Square Enix got conned into thinking something like Forspoken actually had a market to sell to. What a massive oversight.

Forspoken's creative direction was about as bad as Saints Row pivoting from gangsters to hipsters.

I guess they don't like sharing a hobby with females in thier life...I love that my daughters play games with me and their mom.

My son's girlfriend is a gamer. I think there are more games being made to appeal to girls now and it's becoming more socially acceptable for them to game.

Blaming a market miscalculation implies that the game is otherwise good. It isn’t

If you were a kid in the 2008-2013 era of gaming, no girls even wanted to get close to a gaming controller. Go look at YouTube videos of MW2 2009 voice chat lobbies and you’ll know what I’m talking about

That’s also a specific sample. Girls were always the extreme minority, but for example, tended to gravitate a bit more to cooperative MMOs (WoW, RS, etc) than something like a competitive shooter.

Writing theme doomed it. Put a better story with the exact same mechanics and it at the very least doesn't tank an entire development company. I'm fairly certain of that. They tried to target the Life is Strange audience apparently thinking there was crossover with the fantasy action RPG genre. They learned their lesson the hard way.

I guess I’m not following what you mean by “writing theme”. The story is boring. The gameplay is repetitive and boring. The world is empty and boring. The protagonist is annoying and boring.

What “theme” is the problem?

The dialogue read like a tumblr blogger wrote it. The whole plot in general felt very fan-fic'y if that makes sense.

I'm not saying Forspoken was a better story away from game of the year, but I don't think it's so bad it collapses a company if the narrative foundation for the mediocre gameplay was a little more solid. In my opinion, that was its biggest issue. You didn't care about anything in the game because the world and characters were next to impossible to care about.

I agree. Mobile games are not video games.

I’m not disagreeing with any of that. I think our disconnect is that I view all of those things as core problems, not thematic demographic problems which derailed an otherwise passable game. Hell, Horizon ticks a lot of the same boxes. The series is successful because they are good games.

I guess I say that because it came out that they scrapped the original story they had planned during development and replaced it with what we got. Something obviously made them go in a different direction than their original plan. My personal opinion was they were chasing a demographic. There are other explanations, but that makes the most sense to me considering the context.

quote:

Speaking during the Video Game Writing 101 podcast, writer Gary Whitta, who has contributed to several games in The Walking Dead Telltale series, Star Wars: Rebels, and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and was developing the original concept of Forspoken, said that the final product is "nothing like" the original pitch he together with his team of writers worked on.

It's worth mentioning that while Whitta is credited with developing the game’s narrative, he notes that what he worked on was only the foundational lore and that he didn't contribute to the dialogue we now see in the game.

"One thing that I know that I contributed to the [finished] game is the name of the world: Athia," Whitta explained. "That’s literally the only thing I know for sure of mine that’s in the game."

"They came back to me and one of the other writers and said: 'We're going to start over and completely reboot the story. We want it to be this now.' And what they pitched us was something that's very close to what they actually have now which is about a girl from the real world that gets sucked into this fantasy world," Whitta said. "The version that we did was nothing like that."

Although Whitta didn't go into detail about the idea he and his team originally pitched but apparently, it was a completely different story from what we eventually got.

We ultimately agree, but I think I weigh the failures in each aspect of the game differently. You might could make some minor tweaks and fixes to things like the combat to improve it, whereas I think the writing was just a complete miss. I also think good writing can go a long way towards providing enjoyment to sub-par gameplay. Dragon Age: Origins is a perfect example.

If simps didn’t donate to watch these chicks, they wouldnt be playing.

/thread

You can’t realistically tell me the average girl now grows up wanting to shoot things in video games.

If that were true, it would translate in the little years with toys etc. Video games, for boys, was always an extension of that.

Now I would agree more games are made to appeal girls, but not the same time many dudes would play.

Force any of these Twitch girl gamers to watch a video of an online MW2 chat lobby room from the 2009 game. They’d all be crying and saying how racist and misogynistic everyone in those rooms were lmao. Women can’t handle trash talk like men can. It’s ingrained in their brain structure to get offended easily because that’s the nature of women, they’re soft and have too much empathy.

Considering that even gamers consider those chats to be fricking cancer, I'm not sure it's the best example
