I don't want this thread to die because it has been one of my favorites so I figured I would post this.
Tom's $1000 build
They chose very similar parts to my $1000 build. I wish I would have gotten my hands on one of those 7870 myst editions though.

For those of you with X58 and X79 chipsets... Be ready for X99. I'm looking at you blue!

More importantly, the source let us know that the next-generation performance range of CPUs will be coming by the end of the year, and not 2014 as previous speculated. This news comes from a source that is very close to the subject.... We do know, however, that the next-gen performance chip will make use of a chipset called X99.

Ivy-E with an X99 chipset releasing around Titan would have been soooooo choice of a build.

Too bad we have to wait until Q3/4.

I hate to say it but from I have read about the OEM versions it will not work. I believe it is tied to the mobo so you can change anything except that. That is what reviews have said on the Internet at least.

Unless you guys are talking about windows8, this isn't true with windows7. I did this with my build using my laptops 64 bit home premium OEM activation key. I have also done it since with 3 more installs.

seriously?

so, you're saying the OEM disc for Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate could be used on my new CPU/Mobo combo?

this would make me a really happy person. and if true i'll spend the money that would go on that on getting a Samsung SSD for my OS.

my PC boner just woke up from it's sadness since Monday.

I would think it's no problem. If not I have a pirate copy I can send you.

....cool, i checked last night I still have the disc. I don't see why it would be a problem. I did buy the OS and I would still only be using my copy on a single machine.

I use the same oem or ISo for every windows install. Just update the license later. I don't see why it wouldn't work.

So Bruce with 8, you can't do this?

If you are still having trouble with transferring large files (the far cry 3 case), I have a file server you can upload and low load from.

I just need to give you write rights. I would love to see some of the pirated shtt you have.

That was the rumor at first. Initially microsoft was going to set activation be built into the bios. It was also going to be set to where the bios wouldn't accept any form of OS outside of win8. Doing that would have cut out all the linux platforms unless preinstalled from the factory. There was quite an up roar in the open source OS community during the summer.

ETA: I'm not sure if they've changed it to using a sticker now or not.

yeah man, if you couldn't find your disk but still had an activation key, you could get a .iso from here. Obviously you have to download the exact copy as your key is for though.

I was referring to win 7 but like I said I got that from reviews. you never know what info you are going to get there though. So the OEM version can be used multiple times, just only activated on one pc? Is that how it works?

No, I've used activation codes more than once on multiple PCs I'm pretty sure that as long as you don't just start giving them away and there's a noticeable increase of activations with that one key then they won't kill it. There's probably like a 3-5 use limit but I haven't had it fail yet.

ETA: If it does fail, you still get a 30 day window to buy/find/borrow a key.

Windows 8 and Office 365 seem like they are really trying to lock us down again.

Just like they did in enterprise with MS SQL in the late 80s and IE in late 90s.
