The WiiU is actually a blast. They just marketed it horribly.

It sounded like you did...just a few months ago...

Sony’s new patented technology could eliminate used-game sales

if they do this with the used games they will make my mind up for me.

No more Redbox rentals either which is dumb. No telling how many people rent a game for a day or two then go buy the real thing because they liked it.

He's gonna say it's rental, not used.

They definitely flubbed the marketing. Also shouldn't have named the system "Wii U." I think that just confused people.

I haven't picked one up yet but if they start showing some games, games only Nintendo can make with their charm and level of polish, I'll be all over it.

A few have piqued my interest but nothing has stood out yet.

My buddy got one and the basic game Nintendoland is awesome.

The problem with the marketing was they built it around the controller. People thought that it was a $300 gaming controller. Lack of day 1 exclusives hurt too.

Microsoft should stand their ground but get the devs to lower the price of their Digital copies. $30 or $40 for a new game that can be downloaded to the system would be a game changer IMO. Then games that have been out for awhile that people would pay $30 or less at game stop, make them cheaper.

Oh, but there's more.

Stout defending used games and why it's good for the industry...

quote:

Well they (developers) don't make any money off of you playing used games anyway, so they don't care if they lose you.

Yea but then they might miss out on more DLC purchases or a customer trying a new series out and buying future sequels of that series.

Also, this is going to hurt the new game market as well in the sense that as it is now the used game market dictates that prices drop on a new game after it's been out for a while. You think developers are going to be quick to offer price drops when they don't have the competition of used games?

This is how I feel. I don't buy many used games so I'm not specifically concerned about that aspect of it, selling my games back to buy more games, etc.

What's a bigger adjustment for me (and maybe a lot of people) is the transition to a non-physical possession, to "owning" something intangible.

Yes, we have this already with Steam, and I have loads of Steam games, but I'm not worried about Steam going down one day in the near future. I'm not worried about the next PC I buy/build not working with a previously purchased Steam game. (Maybe I should be?)

I AM worried about this with digital purchases with Sony and Microsoft, though. Please correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think the Xbox One or the PS4 will be compatible with previously purchased PSN or XBLA games.

So, that copy of Journey I bought on PS3, what will happen to it when Sony shuts down those servers doling those games out to the last of the PS3 owners? What about that copy of Shadow Complex on XBLA?

No promise of backwards compatibility makes me feel like I'm renting these games, more than buying them. This may not be a concern for Joe-blow gamer, only worried about the latest Call of Battlefield game, but I like (re)playing older games and I'm frequently a couple of years behind the latest releases.

If they ever go to digital copies that I can't keep forever, I'm done.

And that's exactly where I feel like we are headed, at least on the console front.

So stout isn't allowed to have a change in heart? Is this the country we live in?

Because you are. Read the EULA. You don't own the game. You own a license to play the game and the publisher can revoke your license if they see fit.
