Yeah I'm trying to run these on 30 and its damned near impossible. If anyone is on right now I'll help out.
Also, who do I buy from to get gear to get to 30? I was under the impression the only way from 29-30 is raid gear since you can only equip one exotic.

The vanguard and crucible sell new gear now that push you to 31 when fully upgraded. The gloves and boots cost just marks while the helm and chest cost marks and a commendation which you get from leveling up rep a rank.

Is it better to keep gear that has better stats or always go with higher light score?

Go with the light score, you want to level up and stats do not help you in that department. Worry about the stats you want once you're at the point where you're either purchasing the gear yourself or have nothing to spend currencies on.

Haven't looked at new raid videos but I don't want to wait like I did for the last one. We ran the nightfall and weekly last night and did pretty good for the the first time through it. Cant do Friday, but maybe sat or sun

Even if you can't raid this week go in and get the chest that anyone can solo and requires no killing

Really easy. See this video. be sure that if chest is not in there, to go back to orbit and choose RESET on the options and not resume. This will cause the chest to spawn in different location (hopefully the door to the left like in the vid.) I only had to reset 3 times to get the chest spawn there.
