The Witness - fantastic puzzle/adventure game

Discovered and started playing the Witness this week, and wow what a fantastic game.
Probably the closest thing I’ve seen to true genius in video game design. The whole world is a labrynth of increasingly difficult puzzles and mazes. Most of the puzzles are solved on a 2d plane in front of you, but many are reflected in the 3d world that surrounds you.
The creativity behind this game is impressive. It reminds me of the architects in the movie Inception. They take their creative minds and do things they could never imagine in the physical world but are capable of in the dream state. That’s what it’s like stepping into The Witness.
All I can think while playing this game is how awesome would the next Zelda game be if they could get the maker of The Witness to create the dungeons. You’d be talking greatest game of all time.

So there hasn't been a game that has made me want to pull the trigger and buy it more than this after watching the trailer. This looks awesome!

No. No. No.
This is by far the WORST game I've ever played.
Ever.
Everyone heed my warning. Ignore the original post. Run from this game. Run very far away.

I played it for a bit but it eventually got too..... large of a game. Wasn’t sure where I should go next and exploring being locked away wasn’t a great feeling.
If you’re into that stuff, this game is absolutely a must get

I think the game is great. Setting. Art style. Music.
But I'm not smart enough for it.

I almost wish the gameplay were a bit more linear, since it's easy to get lost exploring and next thing you know, you're surrounded by puzzles whose intro levels you haven't discovered yet.
I got Rime when it was a PS Plus game, and it reminds me of a glitzier version of The Witness, but with physical puzzles instead of the 2D ones.

Game is on sale for $9 on PSN if you're interested.

Just beat the game. Was incredible from start to end. Incredibly frustrating at times too, but it’s worth the challenge.
I even worked through the false ending and got the true ending, which was a nice little Easter egg. Again, urge y’all to give this game a shot. Don’t look up solutions, just grind your way through the game, walk away from it if you’re completely stumped and come back later. It’s tough, but one of the most satisfying gaming experiences I’ve had. My wife and I played it together, which probably helped with the brain teasers since one person could usually see something the other didn’t. She doesn’t play games but we both enjoyed The Witness together.

How long was the playthrough?

30+ hours. Still more to do outside of that but 30+ for the main quest.

downloaded it for free and played it for 4 or 5 hours. it was pretty cool and i loved it from an art/design perspective, but it's not for me. Games like that I prefer in a "short but sweet" format. each of the area's puzzle "genres" go on for far too long and get tiresome. I'd much prefer if they took each puzzle concept, had you re-implement it a dozen times or so, then you move on. the more advanced stuff could be done in an extended challenge mode if you desired. take the puzzle that involved using the sunlight to trace the panels - i kept completing them and completing them and it kept going on and on and on and on, so i got to the end and didn't want to play anymore.
i just dont have the time or patience to play an entire game with puzzles of that length.

I didn't beat it but I loved what I played of it. I activated enough lasers to unlock the area on the mountain top but wanted to keep solving the areas I hadn't beaten yet first. The problem is that the game is the closest thing I've seen to a puzzle Metroidvania, but the power you use to unlock new areas is your knowledge of how previous puzzles worked.
Once I took a break from the game for a few months, I was totally unable to remember how many of the puzzles I had already completed worked when I returned. So, I would've
needed to basically start the game over and I didn't have the patience for that.
I'd like to give it another shot one day, though.

I wouldn't go that far. I love the puzzle style and setting of The Witness, but I bump my head against the wall all too often with the puzzles and get discouraged. Talos is still challenging, but there were only 2 or 3 of those puzzles I actually looked up.
Witness = Myst games
Talos = Portal......more or less

I want to play Talos, but I really enjoyed Rime. I played that one far enough to get into the big tower after the sun/moon rolling stone.
