ETA: I just read a more complete spoiler. The Abby character is never redeemed at all. You are just supposed to want to murder Ellie, because the rationale makes no sense.

I hate the story, but isn't one of the doctors he kills at the end of the first game Abby's father?
It's still going to suck but I'd say that's at least a plausible motivation.

On a side note, this made me think of something.
Imagine if this was a big ploy for the dev to get back at the company?
So, the dev is working on the game but makes a mod to alter the appearance of the character. Makes absolutely certain the character is very polarizing, then leaks the footage.
Not only is a good chunk of the game spoiled, but now the company has to either:
1. Go with the modded character
2. Go with the original character and explain that they're not trans, which causes an issue that was never there to begin with.
I mean, I HIGHLY doubt this is what happened, but talk about a pretty major double frick you from the disgruntled employee.

Right, I thought you were referring to her murdering Joel.
I read the reason she's after Ellie is that Ellie kills a lot of people escaping from the village/clan that she was being held in when she went to get revenge on Abby for killing Joel.
It had potential, the circular cycle of revenge, but it seems poorly conceived and too much focus on the newer character.
Also, erasing the first game's ending (saving Ellie vs killing her) is usually considered a big no-no in movies and gaming.
