Jokes on them, my expectations were not subverted at all.
Anyone who's been paying even the least bit of attention should have been expecting the game to be an off the rails SJW cringe fest.
I'm over these fake video game, wanna be movies in general though, regardless of the quality of the story.
Big difference between a video game with a story vs. a story with some video game elements.

I believe OP is referring more to the concept of intentionally doing something the core fan base will hate, thinking you're being super edgy and deep when really that's about as hacky as it gets.
The voice actor who plays Joel was pretty much warning everyone a few weeks ago, said the game was going to divisive and was telling people to please keep an open mind. Always a great sign!
These leaks are not surprising at all, there's a lot of bad blood at Naughty Dog, several devs have anonymously given interviews saying they hope the game fails. There's actually been multiple leaks from multiple different sources now. Seems like being huge assholes has caught up to management.

The leak apparently was sent out by a disgruntled employee. The reason seems to be the studio was using crunch to get the game out quickly.
