I was pretty lukewarm on the idea of this game. I felt like it was just going to cannibalize breath of the wild. I planned to play but I wasn’t excited for it.

I do see the obvious parallels between the two titles, but I’m having a blast. The new abilities and the changes to the map/traversal just work. ultrahand makes the shrines much more fun to play. More room for creativity.

Build a new world or fully expand and perfect the existing one? God of War 2 went this way and it worked out. I think we see this more going forward.

Not sure if it was said in here, but I saw a tweet that summed it up for me: BotW now feels like a rough draft for Tears. Weapon durability is still a dumb mechanic IMO, but fusing made it tolerable and at times really fun.

I'm in no way ready to call this game perfect or a "masterpiece" like what's getting thrown around a lot in this thread. I left the sky island last night, hit Hyrule, and had that same sinking feeling of "oh boy here we are again.........what do I do". This world does still feel empty to me at times but with the new mechanics I feel it will help me get around that.

Just have to be careful what you wish for. It’s one thing to successfully iterate on a formula that shares connective tissue with a prior entry. It’s something else to copy paste lazily. Something tells me if this were to become a trend, we’d see far more of the latter.

I am all for a successful iterative formula running for a decade or longer, provided it’s innovative. I think fromsoft souls formula is a good example of retreading ground while keeping things fresh.

ETA: and I get the critique of the open world with botw/tears. I’m a harsh critic of open world due to “emptiness”. I do think Nintendo does a good job of allowing the player to use the tools given to manipulate the environment in a way that’s more fun than a ubisoft style open world. I will probably still experience open world fatigue but it’s done better here, at least.

i'm admitted Ubi fanboy, so I'll disagree with this, still loving exploring the world of AC Odyssey

And honestly, music is really important to me with games and setting the tone, and I was never a fan of the minimalist approach with the soundtrack in BotW that carried over to this game. I think to me that adds to the feeling of emptiness. I know someone will explain to me how genius this is , but that's just my preference.

a good example of this done well is Jedi Survivor. Yes, they designed new planets for the 2nd game, but generally speaking the same concepts are all there, but they expanded on them beautifully by adding new enemy types and new ways to traverse the areas. They didn't try and reinvent the wheel but instead added to what already worked very well.

I saw it. Thought it needed a fan. Nosedived off the cliff to my first death. Love this game.

I didn't explore enough (or look up) to see another set of islands above the shrine so I had no chance of seeing it.

Just beat the wind temple. Really liked how they set that up.

Also found the updated Champion’s Tunic and got some Hylian pants. So now Link doesn’t look like an a-hole running around with a top and no pants in the freezing cold

I just bought new clothes at the camp store at the Hyrule village ruins where saucy vixen Purah's telescope is.

Rito dungeon made me feel real stupid. Obvious door was obvious and I spent 2 hours trying to figure out the last fricking puzzle. When I saw it I was sick. It was right in front of me the whole time and I never thought for a second it was a door. When in doubt, hit your Ultrahand button and see what highlights. There. Saved someone hours

The trip getting there was nuts. Didn't think it was ever going to end.

But, my Link's a drow now. I'm underground about 75% of the time. There are some brutal enemies down here. I can't come out until I conquer it all..or as much as I can before I'm blocked off for story reasons.

I got really lucky on that one. I was losing my mind and couldn’t figure it out for 10 minutes. Then I saw a space between them and then noticed the handles and thought “Hmm… let me see if I can open this”.

If I hadn’t noticed that crack I would have wandered around for an hour or more

I was the opposite, I found the Greek looking shorts and sandals, then the cold weather pants, before I even found a shirt (that I bought). My arse was running around Hyrule shirtless in the snow like a member of the Bills Mafia

Same here. Still don't have a shirt.

I am embarrassed to admit how long it took me to complete a wind shrine on my way to the Rito area. I kept trying to balance the hot air baloon heat with a torch and was constantly setting the wooden board beneath me on fire. It wasn't until I realized I was supposed to use the Zonai fire head things that I finally got it done.

I got hooked on doing the stable quests. I like the reward we get. Now it’s time for the ultimate time-suck of upgrading armor.

There was a shirt somewhere on the starting sky islands? If so, I never found it.

If y'all need gear, you need to keep checking in the shelter below Lookout Landing. Very soon a solution will become available.

I think so, all the preview and sneak peeks of them playing the great sky island had him wearing something that matches the shorts and sandals. But I never found it either

I found the cold weather pants up there and that's it.
