I'm already seeing some hitching /lag. they changed the autosave to every 20 minutes and it definitely lags when the save updates.
I was wondering if a massive world with deformation would lead to lag. Subnautica had plenty of issues with that and it appears to be happening a little bit to me. Not game breaking but a pain in the arse if it happens mid battle with low stamina.

Bad death. Real bad. Top gear. Hit a tiny sandbar in the fog. Ship was taking damage from leeches and a draugr. Jumped out to get the draugr.Poison. Dead.
Got my spare tiny boat and headed out to get my corpse. No wind. Sea Serpent that was parked on the coastline killed the ship then me.
More brutal than any dark souls death.

Damn, that sounds a lot like what happened to me. At least you don't have to deal with Deathsquitos to get your stuff back. Good luck!

I’ve died so many times miles away from my base that I’ve learned to bring mats for a portal if I’m going in uncharted territory. Will save you a lot of time recovering your body. Also, make sure to label your portal to a home portal or it does you no good :(.

kinda lost on what to do at the moment. we haven't played for a week and it feels like right now the only thing to do is keep mining these swamp caves for more iron before we go fight the boss. but we know as soon as we finish out full iron armor sets its just gonna give us a better armor set to craft in the mountains so what is the point. our base is safe af because we got a meadow on the edge of the swamp with an unbreakable tree seperating it from the swamp that the mobs can't jump over, so we just walled around the other end of it

The game is very grindy, which is not my favorite, but there’s always a sense of am I going to die doing it? Never really felt like that in other games I guess. My biggest fear is having a boat load of ore that took hours to get, only to have it all sink to the bottom of the ocean on the way back home. There’s always that thought of impending doom with this game. It took me 2 hrs the other night trying to get back to Moder’s island in a shitty raft because I had lost everything on multiple attempts to get back there. I rode for hours in a loin cloth praying the ocean wasn’t going to come alive and sink another boat.
To your question, after leveling up iron and finding moder’s location, I just started hitting all the mountain areas getting silver and wolf pelts. The wolf armor is fairly easy to get. Much easier than the swamp imo. You should be able to get all ya need pretty quickly in the mountains, and be able to upgrade almost everything you have. Of course getting all that loot home isn’t a guarantee lol.

Bought this Friday. Discord pals setup a hosted server in the amazon cloud.
We started from nothing and last night 5 of us raided the Second boss.
We lost a ship with TONS of ore to the Kracken. Many Ooofs.
Made a decision to raft back to the black forest from the meadows but sorta near where the second boss spawned. Build a home away from home complete with forge and kiln set up so we could get the ore from the BF Biome and craft armor right there so.. then made a portal to move back to the main meadow base for tending other chores/needs.
This proved to be way better than attempting to raft/boat back and forth. The overall game is 100% worth 20bucks if you like any type of PvE survival style game.

I do that on land ventures. Wouldn't do me any good 45 minutes away on a ship. lol.

Made my first venture out to sea to get to the island with the second boss. Brought mats for a portal at the dock I was planning to build when I got there. Was full before I shipped out so I had to drop the fine wood to build something and forgot to pick it back up. Realized too late so I had to search for some on the new island. Finally found it but wasn’t paying attention to health or the tree falling, and well, you can guess what happened.

this game can choke on a bag of....
lol.
Out in the middle of nowhere in the ocean. See a turtle or titan or whatever those things are called. I didn't realize that the waves were smashing my boat into the turtle. I mined for a bit....turtle started to submerge and my boat was destroyed.
With me in the middle of the ocean.

I was able to cheese my way back to land by logging in and out but I am a bazillion miles from home. Best I can do is build a raft and slow roll my way home praying I don't encounter a sea serpent.

Might be easier to find some of those surtiling (sp?) Cores in a burial chambers and portal back if there's a black forest close by.
The mountains have been a lot more fun than the swamp, but I think I'm ready to find the boss and move onward to the Plains. There's a cool area not far from my main island. It's a mostly meadows biome with a smaller plains biome right in the middle. There's also a ruined town full of Draugr straddling the line of the meadows and plains. So when I go there, there's always Draugr fighting fuglins and those big ox things. That's some fun randomness there and I love how it just works. I also get some free loot every time I visit.

This is kinda cheesy, but I have 2 seeds. My main game and one with just a house and 4 chests in it. When I get full of ore I just log out and put it on the other seed. When I get back to my base I just log out, grab it and log back in.
I loaded a cart once with tin and copper but it was so heavy it would barely move up all the bumpy hills. Took me about 2 hrs to get back. Did it once for the experience but I just cheese it for the most part.
Once you get the Longship, as long as you repair it before you go out each time, a sea serpent won't break it. You can get hit quite a few times in that and if you are at least half mast, they won't catch you anyway.Longshot,
ETA: bonus - here is my base. Still a WIP but the skeleton is at least done.

If you are going to do that, you might as well load the mod that has no portal restrictions.
Posted on 3/2/21 at 7:21 am to TigerMyth36
Nah, there's no reason to mod with that work around. Once I start modding it's a slippery slope to boredom.

My Bonemass is in a miserable location. Massive swamp size in the middle with deep water everywhere. Made worse by about 75% of the land around the spawn location is deep water. I'm going to have to bring the hoe and stone and go to town raising some ground around the spawn point and maybe a little pathing to the boss fight. PAIN in the A.

Had a swamp attack after I culled my boar population and lost the two remaining. Had a pair of two stars tamed on another island so I sailed my longship to pick them up. After some careful maneuvering I got them both aboard. Halfway through the voyage, one decides to jump ship. I managed to harpoon him and drag him along the rest of the way. As I’m docking in the river next to my base, I hit the bank and somehow the boar that didn’t jump off dies. I do manage to drag the jumper into the pen, and I hung the Boar Trophy from the dead one on the wall looking over my boar, bees, and turnips.
