The Xbox 720 will be revealed on May 21 ahead of a November release and probably won't offer backwards compatibility, according to veteran technology blogger Paul Thurrott.

On the latest What the Tech podcast, Thurrott claimed that Microsoft's next console will be available from November for either $500 for a normal model, or $300 for a subscription model. He also weighed in on the mounting evidence that suggests the next Xbox will be always online.

"The thing that interests me, going back and looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says ‘must be internet-connected to use’ in the notes," he explained, before adding, "And that’s all I have, but it does say that."

Despite fears to the contrary, Thurrott also asserted in the podcast that the Xbox 720 will be a gaming device first and foremost, and will not attempt to serve as an entertainment hub for the living room. Supposedly another model of the console was originally planned to target that niche, but the idea has since been put on the back-burner.

Of course one of the biggest features many gamers are keen to see in the next generation of consoles is backwards compatibility; sadly, while we already know that it won't be a feature in the PlayStation 4 at launch, Thurrott reckons that Microsoft's console won't be offering it either, citing the company's readiness to release a cheaper Xbox 360 model in November alongside it's new box.

There are other rumors out today saying this plan was scrapped a while ago. That's why these threads are pretty pointless.

It was on my Twitter feed this morning. I think it was VG24/7 reporting it. You can go dig for it.

Eh. It's fun for discussion. At least it's IGN, not mom and pop VG reviews.

I just want them to disclose how many months it will take for the first generation of 720s to RROD.

I wanna know how long my first investment of 500 bucks will run me before it turns into a doorstop.

Is there anything more overblown than backwards compatibility when next gen consoles release? If the old games are that important to you, keep the old console.

I think it's just become an internet talking point for people to whine about.

No thanks.

Edit: Pretty sure I found it. LINK

If this is it, they're referring to the "Yumo" being cancelled. The "Stingray" is a different thing.

Is there a price point when parents say NO?

My mother would have laughed if I had requested an inflation adjusted $500.00 Christmas gift.

For just a little more than $500.00, you can build a more versatile computer.

If I get one of the next consoles, it will be the PS4. I'd miss Metal Gear more than I'd miss Halo.

What's the difference? Does the $500 one get free xbox live? What would I be paying a subscription to for the cheaper one?

Yeah I thought that was weird too.

The more I hear about this new Xbox the more I'm leaning towards play station. And I've had a 360 and the original. All this talk about half the memory being dedicated to the Kinect and other nonsense is a huge turnoff.

It's also rumors as of now.

People need to chill out until the official announcement next month.

No way. I'd rather decide my next gaming console purchase 6 months in advance based on rumors and fanboy articles.

The $500 will probably have a bigger HD and maybe some other "extra". A $300 version would have a smaller HD and commit you to a period of xbox live at full price to make up the pricing difference. I've seen this model get crapped on by some but it gives more people the opportunity to get their hands on a console. Makes business sense to me.

The PS3 was $600 when it came out.
