Looking for a Christmas gift for kid

Will be used for essentially solely sports games for the time being.

Is the pro version necessary vs slim?

What about digital only vs disc version?

Everything is digital now when it comes to buying games. Unless he plans on borrowing/sharing games with friends, the digital will be just fine.

As for the Pro, only get it if he/you has a higher-end TV that he will be playing on where he can really notice/take advantage of the higher settings or it’s going to be a moot point.

I personally never buy disc's so digital version is fine for me.

No way is the Pro worth the extra money

The downvotes are probably from the last 2-3 people still going to gamestop for physical copies. He's also right about the Pro part. If you don't have a tv/monitor with at least 120hz it's probably pointless.

Pro isn't worth it if sports games are what he plays. He probably wouldn't notice a difference in most other games either.

I would go digital. I haven't put a physical game disc in a console this generation which started four years ago.

I didn’t expect my post to be that spicy of a take

FWIW IMO, get the regular, digital PS5 and use the savings to buy an extra controller, the controller docking port (a must for me because I hate wires), and the Madden/NCAA 25 bundle. There’s hundreds of hours of content to play there, and the extra controller lets you or a friend play with him if the situation arises.

Gamers are a weird bunch, if it’s sports games then the digital slim regular will be just fine. I’m rocking the OG disc version only because I want to watch some movies in 4K.

Exactly. It actually contributed to the subject.

Like I don’t understand taking the time to downvote a post like that without responding and giving their take.

There's xbox people who act like 12 year olds and downvote shite on here.

You don't want a pro, it's a waste of several hundred dollars extra.

I’d get the standard disc version. I’m pro-physical media.

Pro isn’t worth the price.

Standard with disc. Your kid can get used games, borrow games, and some times new games for less than a digital version.

I just don’t agree with everything is digital now.

I bought a disc recently because it was cheaper that way than buying off the PlayStation store.

I also got the disc version to play ps4 games I already had.

There are way more deals on physical media than the digital games. I got a PS5 disc when the slim went on sale, I bought a ton of JRPG's for peanuts on physical media. I got one game for $12 new that is still $70 on the Playstation store.

I don't see a reason to pay for the pro, juice isn't worth the squeeze.

Kids aren't really much about physical games these days, they grew up in a world without them, so being purely digital is fine assuming you have a decent internet connection and can download big games within a reasonable amount of time. If for some reason you have a big pre-existing library of physical PS4 games you'd like to continue to play, PS5 is backwards compatibility with PS4 games and that would be a reason to get a disk drive.

But odds are you don't need a disk drive and if you ever found yourself needing on, you can always add one later. The new PS5's are modular in that the disk drive can be added/removed so you aren't stuck digital if you change your mind.

I personally like physical media so I got a disk drive version. There's also the ability to share games with friends or borrow their games, and yes, you can snag deals on physical games too occasionally.

As for the Pro model, skip it if you're trying to save some money. It's far more of a luxury than a necessity. Totally unnecessary for like 99% of the games out there, and especially general sports games. It's basically for tech-centric geeks who want their games to run at the maximum possible frame rate with all the latest graphical options turned up to the maximum. Many of those of things are barely even noticeable IMO and none of them are needed to make any game enjoyable. Slightly more defined shadows or slightly better textures on rocks 200 yards away, etc. If the marginal cost of like the extra $200 doesn't bother you, sure why not, but if he's literally just gonna play sports games, you'd almost never get your money's worth out of its extra power.

Exactly. I recently snagged a physical copy of AC6 for $19.99 and the lowest it has been on the PlayStation store is $35.99. Last year I got a physical copy of Returnal for $17.99 and the lowest it has been on the PlayStation store is $29.39.

While I generally prefer buying digital, there are really good deals on physical.

if your son is the type of person who will go out looking for deals where they can be found (stores, internet, friends) to get cheap discs then there could be some value in the disc version. There are also subscription services like game fly that will mail you rental discs for monthly fees. that's pretty old school and i dont think lot of people still use it. i do. You got to play a lot of games to get value out of it though.

if your son is not into all that, all games are easily gotten through online digital means now days. you can often catch sales and things but not quite as often or as good as those things i mentioned above.

Pro vs slim: right now you will get very little extra bang for the Pro. There are very few games that are pro specific right now that utilize its potential. That potential btw, is not really that much stronger than the slim ps5. A year or two down the line there might be more games that do so. Essentially the hope is pro games will be high texture with good FPS. Right tnow with slim/basic ps5 you gotta choose what you want. If you dont have a real great TV or your kid isnt into really graphic intense games, he probably wont give shite either way.

still going to gamestop for physical copies.

You can buy used games for decently cheap on places like Ebay. I mean it's not always a massive price difference but I save $10-20 here and there. I know some people are worried about getting scammed on there but Ebay has gotten better about it and you got to check the reviews for the buyer. Also I use paypal which usually will refund you if Ebay doesn't. Never had a problem with Ebay gaming purchases personally
