LINK
Unexpected article where Sony confirmed the PS5's existence.
Quick summary:
- CPU: AMD 7nm Zen 2, 8 cores
- GPU: custom Radeon Navi, including raytracing support
- SSD + custom interfacing to massively increase bandwith (Spiderman freetravel demo: 15 seconds to 0.8 seconds)
- PS4 Backwards compatibility (other platforms not confirmed)
- Physical media
- PSVR '1' compatible
- on-chip 3D audio support
- not coming 2019 (no surprise)

I wonder how much longer physical media is gonna last. There's talk about a new Xbone releasing soon with no disc drive. I thought the PS5 might go that route. Maybe there will be two versions.

They're going to have to have cloud storage or something figured out because 2TB can honestly get used up pretty quick with how big I imagine the games will start getting.

good. doing this will save money on remasters. it was dumb for them to quit doing it with the ps3 and emulating them for ps4.

Or make it so that you can play games off the disc without having to install the entire thing. I'm a bit surprised Sony hasn't released their own external ssd or some sort of official removable storage device.

I think most Switch games play right off the cartridge (sans updates of course).

PS4/Xbox One games do not, but I thought that had more to do with load times.

Probably not a good move because not everyone has fast internet. Would lose a ton of customers.

They are supposed to announce that disc drive-less xbox this afternoon. Just a digital only Xbox One S that is supposed to be around $200 with 2-3 games already pre-installed and so many months of game pass.

Probably want to get it out of the way, so they can focus on xClound, Lockhart, and Anaconda at E3.

sorry I'll edit my original post, I was replying to the comment about the supposed disc drive-less xbox. They are "officially" announcing it this afternoon at 4 pm Central on inside xbox. Conflicting reports of going on sale this afternoon when announced and May 7th.

So Xbox has now had to release 3 versions of one generation of a console just to try and catch up to PS4 in sales? Sad.

Hopefully not much longer. Discs are dumb and unnecessary

Eh, while potentially inconvenient, I hope there is always at least some option for the physical version of a game. I'm glad there are places like Limited Run Games that try to preserve games in physical form.

You have got to be the biggest corporate slave for Sony I've ever seen.

Microsofts position is so secure they can make a new console just for shits and giggles and see what happens.

While definitely dying out, physical media is still much more popular in Japan than in the US from what I understand.

There's still a large enough audience of people who want or need physical that choosing not to have any physical support is a move that cuts out a decent chunk of potential customers.

If you were going to do that, the new XBox is probably doing it the right way. Make it an optional feature that people can choose to pay a little extra for if they need it.

I would be surprised if it has Zen 2, the Zen 2 APU's still aren't even out. Most likely will be Zen+. It's nearing final production.

The chip hit 3DMark the other day and was up from 1GHz to 1.6GHz base clock from January sample, very nice jump.

The Navi 10 Lite GPU was up to a 1.8GHz base clock, which is exceptionally good and double the clock of the PS4 Pro. 7nm really paying off here.
