Why do developers think survival mechanics are fun when put in games that aren't survival-based?
Eating, sleeping, cleaning, repairing things, etc are all chores in real life. They're no more fun in the video game world.

Prepare for many hours of riding your horse.

Wasn’t that impressed with the game. They could have done much better.

I don't think for a second that Rockstar thought all that shite was fun or interesting.
They did it as part of their overall commitment towards "realism" and the tone they wanted for the game.
On the one hand you could admire them for their artistic integrity, then again it could just be viewed as pretentious and a masturbation of ego.
The game is unnecessarily slow and downright tedious in some ways. I was able to put up with it because I found the world so impressive.

Actually none of that stuff bothered me in the game. I feel like that was a very minimal amount of the actual game

Same, I didn't even notice it and actually it added to the overall immersion for me

It’s a great game but as someone who always feels like I have to do as much side shite as possible before advancing the game it got to be overwhelming. I’d start it up and be like “frick what should I do? Hunt? A mission? rob some shite? Get a new horse? Gamble?” Not saying having so much to do is a bad thing but I’d end up playing for like 30 min, feel overwhelmed and just say frick it and turn it off. I’ll eventually go back to it but I’ve started playing other games for now

RDR2 feel victim to a lot of unintended consquences.
They wanted you to interact with people in camp, so they made you walk really, really, really slow in camp to ensure you would have interactions with NPC's... but I hated the slowdown in camp so much that I avoided camp as much as possible and thus missed out on a ton of the interactions.
They made the most side activities not particularly rewarding (in terms of $ or progress) so they wouldn't feel mandatory, but they were so unrewarding there isn't any real incentive to do them.
You could craft specialty ammo to do more damage, ONE BULLET AT A TIME, however with headshots everything dies in one shot anyway, so crafting ammo is pointless. Same story with tonics. You collect all these plants and recipes and shite, but I played 200 hours and never once ran out of tonics. You can also just buy them in the store for super cheap if you do, so crafting anything is pointless. Crafting is fulfilling in games because you feel like you are accomplishing something or gaining something neat you otherwise couldn't. Crafting for the sake of crafting isn't fun.
RDR2 is just a very strange game. I all but 100%'ed it, played 200+ hrs, and I still don't really don't know how I fully feel about it. There are so many great, amazing things about it but also so many things about it that are infuriating or poorly designed.
Loving it or hating it or anything in between are all valid opinions.

They had so many stupid mechanics that were meaningless.
I didn’t hunt a single animal or pick a single plant. Who has time for that shite

I'm not trying to bash you. Just in all honesty I think you are worrying too much about the survival stuff. I played for like 80 hours and I maybe ate at camp like 6 times. Im having a very hard time understanding your issues with survival.

I only hunt to sell the meat and pelts for extra cash. Between the stew at the camp and looting food of off dead people...there's really no reason to do it.
I've yet to sleep with the exception of doing it to fast-forward to the next day and only eat when my health is low after a fight. Not sure why those two are considered to be so annoying in this game.
I don't consider this to be a "survival" game so much as just a "I've already masturbated and have nothing else to do for the next few hours" kind of game.

Only annoying thing for me was anytime I was looting after a mission every dead body or furniture piece and the gang would try to rush me back to the story and away from my rummaging.
There should be a STFU option. I am going to fence all this shite later and need custom outfits + weapons.

I killed the legendary bear only because he fricked me up after that cutscene and I needed vengeance.

AC Odyssey did it right with the autopathing to waypoints. If you needed to go halfway across the map you could just put the controller down.

I was so pissed with that scene. That was early enough in the game for me to not know how to bring one of my weapons from the horse. Only had my hand pistol. Figured dead eye would be enough to get him if he jumped me.
I was wrong. So very wrong.

Bought it this week and was surprised by this as well. As a big fan of the first one, it was kinda disappointing. I’ll definitely continue to play though bc it’s so well made.
