Oh, my bad, I misread your comment:

I believe they're both going to end up with disc drives on the consoles. I don't know that, but it would be an extremely stupid move not to do that.

We're going to witness Nintendo taking back over the console space if this plays out the way these rumors claim.

Piracy is making a comeback, as it should.

Seems like the only solution. Guess I'll have to figure out a way to jailbreak a console and just start stealing everything. Or stop gaming. I'm not moving to fully digital.

I am sure they won’t have a disc drive as well but damn Sony just tossed XBOX such a softball. They need anything to get some momentum back and gain market share next gen.

It won’t happen but it should.

Would be a historic whiff.

These are clearly boardroom-level decisions. They're looking at "total game sales" and coming to a very wrong conclusion. People aren't buying your console for the arcade/indie game releases. Those provide value, but they're not the selling point. They're buying it because they like the exclusive games you offer and/or they like the gaming platform you offer. People are still buying physical for the tentpole titles they want in their collection. The games they are less invested in and are willing to purchase completely digital aren't what are selling your console. They can get that just as easily with a PC.

Their strategy has led to a disastrous loss of market share over the past several years. Perhaps they need a new strategy.

I don't disagree, I predicted this when they bought Activision. But it's xbox, they are very stubborn.

People were given a choice between digital/physical for a decade now and the decision was loud and clear

PS5 sales are 85/15 digital/physical
Xbox sales are 90/10 digital/physical

Physical media enthusiasts like us are a loud yet very small minority. Average consumer does not give a shite.

Now that GOG is the only platform that offers offline installers for their digital games, I can see them getting a huge boost in customers. You can download offline installers for every one of their games and burn them to BD-R discs, save to an internal drive or USB stick, store on a NAS, whatever you want

I have 48TB of storage on my NAS so I will certainly be taking advantage

Even if we assume 10 or 15%, that's a whole lot of money to just be leaving on the table. They won't make that back.

ETA: My very unscientific web search says annual gaming revenue is about $187.7B. 10% of that would be $18.77B. Just wild to leave that kind of money on the table.

The assumption is that many will convert and sony/ms no longer have to deal with the expenses of producing the discs.

Consumers in this market tend not to exhibit traits that show a willingness to boycott in any meaningful way.

The more likely scenario is that people bitch as they preorder the next game/console. Especially if there isn’t an easy/convenient alternative.

Not arguing with you, just an observation.

Eh...if they really go this route, I'm betting people who want physical will just move to PC like Carson is saying. There's just no incentive to purchase a console for people like me if there isn't a disc to purchase.

Even if I want to stay on Game Pass, I can do that cheaper on PC with the PC-only sub. The benefit to a console is I get to collect physical copies of the games I enjoy.

PC focused services will benefit greatly from this, but you are still just moving from one digital storefront to another.

You can potentially use GOG to archive some installers/files but that is a little tedious.

The weakening of the console market might lead to the pc storefronts becoming aware of their increased market share which could lead to some additional blowback.

Welcome aboard the pc train, but I’m not sure it’s any different in the long run.

Honestly, I'm just as likely to quit altogether. Haven't really thought about it because it hasn't really happened yet, but this is the equivalent of NIL in college football for me. This is sapping the joy out of gaming if this is the route they go. Maybe I'd just start trying to collect older consoles and older games.

ETA: I agree with you that PC isn't "better" or "different," but that's the point. Why get a console when it's just a packaged PC with no disc drive and no physical discs? Just get a PC. Guess I've gotta hold out hope that Nintendo won't take this crazy pill too.

This is true, but they are going out of their way to kill us off. Nobody sane would expect them to treat physical as a first class citizen anymore. I'd be fine if you had to pay an extra $5-$10 to custom order a disc based version of the game, but they are going out of their way to make sure it isn't an option.

it's true digital won out but it was rigged game the entire time, it won not only because of the advantages it has but also because it providers greater profits and power to them, they bent over backwards to make sure physical was exterminated.

This. The ability to buy the game physical was really the last tangible thing a gaming console could offer you.

If the future of video games is all games locked behind a digital storefront, I'm going to choose the most free, open, trustworthy, flexible, digital storefront platform I can, and that sure as F isn't Sony's POS.

There are also lots of copies on eBay for about $20 bucks too.

All of this shite goes away soon and your only option if you want it will be to pay full retail price.
