This program is definitely a sign toward not removing discs, not the other way around

So they are introducing a way to move ur discs to digital before the new console because you are totally gonna be able to still use those discs in the new console? Lol

Are you gonna boycott if they do in fact eventually announce the next console wont come with a disc drive?

Well yes. It's not taking something away from you. It's adding the ability to play the game without having to put the disc in every time. It's the whole "play anywhere" thing they've been doing for years, just with discs.

I have no intention of buying a next gen console with no physical media option. I'll move to PC because there is actual competition on PC, such as the XBOX PC store, steam, Epic, etc. Plus, PC Game Pass is cheaper than Ultimate.

If the Helix allows PC games to be played and also allows PC storefronts like steam, Epic, etc to be used, that might be a consideration. That will depend on how it compares to other PC options.

Steam has a massive monopoly on PC, there is almost zero competition. It is all anyone uses so much so all the other stores have had to bite the bullet over the last year or two and bring all their games to Steam largely because people just straight up won't play or buy your game if it isn't on Steam.

Just last year they did a massive developer survey and 72% said Steam is a monopoly, and 88% of studios said at least 75% of their total game revenue is from Steam.

Physical media for gaming died with the ability of consoles to connect to the internet and download patches. It was the excuse devs needed to ship broken products on disk and "fix it later," via a day one patch or otherwise.

Completely false. If there was no competition, there would be no Gog, Epic Store, or even the XBOX PC store.

Sure, steam is the best platform on PC, but all of these other stores have carved out a market. Otherwise, they wouldn’t exist.

And here is the lawsuit earlier this year in the UK against Valve for allegedly using this Steam monopoly to create unfair prices.

Steam literally has competition. Any claim otherwise is just false.

By contrast, MS, Sony, and Nintendo have monopolies on their console stores. Their only competition is physical sales and the used games market.

There is a massive difference between the two.

Its called third party developers. Games are competing with other games. Thats why they have sales.

Steam doesnt have sales to try to beat the epic game store. They have sales because the developers are competing with the entire steam library. This applies to ps store and microsoft store as well

007 first light is on sale 20% off right now. Because the day 1 sales have dried up. Now they are trying to entice people that didnt feel like paying $70 for it.

It is a monopoly of choice, though.

Are we wanting Steam to be less awesome, so Epic can compete?

Agreed.

Can you imagine the amount of testing games went through when you were stuck with the code that was hardwired into a physical cartridge? No updates or patches, you're stuck with Rev 0.0 as shipped.

WTF would you do to patch a cartridge? Send out new cartridges?

Not googling it but I wonder if a cartridge game was ever shipped so broke it didn't run right.

They just patched glitches people found and shipped out updated versions like ocarina of time.

You can get ocarina of time 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2.

This is the correct answer. People are choosing to use Steam's store more than they are choosing to use their competitor's stores.

This choice does not exist for the MS, Sony, Nintendo console stores.

This sort of competition is not going away and is not part of the conversation. The competition that is being removed is the developer against third party sales.

I'm sure this has nothing to do with the fact that you can get a physical copy of the game right now for $50 on ebay.

Publishers dictate game prices and decide when things on sale. Storefronts have literally no bearing on prices for games that they don't publish. We all know exactly which titles we can wait for a sale on (like Bethesda) and which ones we'll rarely ever see on sale (like Activision) based on publisher history.

Also, every noteworthy publisher and/or storefront has some form of price parity requirements in place - if a game goes on sale at one storefront, it usually has to go on sale at all of them. Steam also explicitly requires MSRP to be the same on Steam as it is everywhere else. It's why you could buy Doom TDA for $23.09 on Steam, PSN, and Xbox a week ago and sales almost always have perfect parity across all platforms.

Which was the point of contention.

Epic wanted publishers to discount on their platform alone. They were hoping they could drive customers to their shitty platform with exclusive lower prices.

Gabe was like "Bet. But then you can't sell on Steam"

Epic has not stopped crying about it.

Your mind is stuck in the stone ages. Noone is buying steam games on ebay, yet 007 is 20% off there too

Yes, physical copies on eBay do effect digital prices on steam.
