Publishers dictate game prices and decide when things on sale. Storefronts have literally no bearing on prices for games that they don't publish. We all know exactly which titles we can wait for a sale on (like Bethesda) and which ones we'll rarely ever see on sale (like Activision) based on publisher history.

Thank you for highlighting why physical media is necessary.

And that people just dislike other stores, be it the EA App or Blizzard Launcher or Epic Games Store, so when Epic was buying out exclusivity for games early on forcing people to use it, so many people still rejected that idea that within a few years it basically dried up completely and developers/publishers stopped making exclusive or timed deals with Epic.

People just want Steam on PC, everything else is just kinda there.

There has not been physical media on PC in a decade and Steam has a total monopoly on the entire PC gaming market, but they still run a TON of sales every year and are famous for it. Hell we used to have a thread for every steam sale on here.

They just patched glitches people found and shipped out updated versions like ocarina of time.

You can get ocarina of time 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2.

I would imagine that is a very rare occurrence in the cartridge era versus the modern digital era.

ITT: No one has a clue what the definition of an illegal monopoly is.

Valve is facing antitrust suits in both the US and UK and the US judge recently denied their motion for summary judgement (so it's headed to a jury trial).

As far as I know, neither trial has been scheduled yet, so they probably won't be resolved until 2027.

ETA: I give up.

You should actually read what those cases are about. They aren't claiming Valve has no competition. They're claiming Valve is using its position as market leader to limit competition.

Who does that sound like on the console side?

Bro just give up with that fricking retard, did you see his reply to over 300 game developers saying steam is a monopoly? No point in arguing with someone that thinks that way, they are the lowest of lows in western society today.

All he does is ragebait like a 16 year old on Twitter. He's the new punching bag of the board for good reason.

This is an hilarious response after I pointed out that the argument being made in court about Steam mirrors what Sony does in the console market. They aren't calling them a monopoly, they're claiming they have anti-competitive practices. Seems unlikely that they will win, because Steam doesn't have a monopoly on the PC gaming market. Anything's possible, I guess.

Also, that other poster is scared of me. He won't respond to my posts and simply follows me around and downvotes. He's the definition of a coward. You're an idiot for thinking he's responded to anything I've said. He won't do that because he knows he'll look like a clown, just like you just did.

Just a reminder to get this thread back on track: Sony holds an actual monopoly on games sold on its consoles.

Ok as a digital purchaser i understand i dont own the games forever. But as long as sony/Playstation exist i should own them.

Obviously if they go out of business i dont expect their (expensive) servers to just magically work and allow me to re-download games. Same with steam.

But this isnt that. They are removing accounts after 36 months of inactivity or something like that.

Yeah they are engaging in extremely anti-consumer activity that should not be accepted by any gamers whatsoever.

What they're saying in court should be a huge red flag to everyone in this thread who is defending their move to an all-digital platform. They're telling you what they plan to do and how they view you as the consumer and "owner" of what they sell to you. You should believe them.

Its just hard to really care because i never go 3 weeks without logging in much less 3 years.

I guess i could go into a coma, that would suck to come out with my account deleted

This is only in the EU and it's due to how Sony interprets their obligations under the GDPR.

Sony supposedly sends an email warning to the user 6 months beforehand.

ETA: Microsoft closes inactive US and EU accounts after 2 years, unless one of the exceptions listed here applies: Microsoft account activity policy

I love it when you post links that dispute your assertions. Look at the "exceptions" list on your link and you will quickly see how Microsoft's and Sony's practices are far different.

quote:

Exceptions: The activities below are exceptions that will result in Microsoft extending your account’s active status, even if you have not otherwise signed in to your Microsoft account within a two-year period.

Purchases: If you have used your Microsoft account to purchase, or to redeem or access a purchase of, a current Microsoft product or service, your Microsoft account will remain active and Microsoft will not close your account due to inactivity. Note, this does not apply to gift cards, certifications or subscription-based purchases or services.

Subscriptions: Your Microsoft account will continue to remain active for so long as you have an active Microsoft subscription associated with your Microsoft account. Following the expiration or termination of the subscription, you must sign in to your Microsoft account at least once in a two-year period to keep your account active.

Yeah I definitely log in to my accounts more often than once every 2 years, even for things I'm no longer using, because I want to be sure no one has hacked a "stale" account.

I am ultimately on your side in this debate but you’re making it harder than it should be

Unless you've ever made a purchase on the account.

Also, there were other exceptions. Those are just the only two that make it clear this would never happen to anyone who has anything he/she cares about tied to his/her Microsoft account.

ETA: Here's the other exceptions:

quote:

Publishing to the Microsoft Store: If you have used your Microsoft account to publish applications or games (including game DLCs) to the Microsoft Store or to register for a Microsoft Partner Center account, your Microsoft account will remain active and Microsoft will not close your account due to inactivity.

Certifications: If you earn a certification from Microsoft using your Microsoft account, your Microsoft account will remain active and Microsoft will not close your account due to inactivity.

Account Balance: Your Microsoft account will continue to remain active for so long as you have an unspent balance in your Microsoft account (e.g. from a Microsoft gift card or a credit from Microsoft). If you live in a jurisdiction where gift cards are considered “unclaimed property,” Microsoft will, pursuant to local law, escheat the unspent balance associated with your Microsoft gift card.

Accounts Payable: Your Microsoft account will continue to remain active for so long as there is an amount owed to you by Microsoft associated with your Microsoft account (e.g. amounts due to you from Microsoft Payment Central).

Family Accounts: If you have an inactive Microsoft account that has granted consent for an active Microsoft account belonging to a minor, Microsoft will not close your Microsoft account due to your inactivity. Your inactive Microsoft account will be kept open by Microsoft until the minor’s account (i) is deemed inactive and closed by Microsoft, (ii) is closed by you, or (iii) transitions into a standard Microsoft account when the minor reaches the requisite age of majority in their region.

Sorry I haven’t been on TD for like a month I was trying to catch up on all this and just chose one

Can you give me a fairly short summary of the last 3-4 pages since I posted summing up your position vs your detractors?
