re: Physical disc production ending in January 2028 for new games releasing on PlayStation

They aren't getting rid of the discs. They're giving people the digital rights to games they purchase on discs.
Because the next console isnt gonna have discs and they dont want people like you crying about it. They are gonna allow you to digitize your current games on your xbox series X so that you can play them on the next xbox with that digital license.
Also i like how you ignored my post about discs being meaningless since you couldn't play your physical games on Xbox last week during the server outage.

Meanwhile, over at Playstation:
This issue was raised in the comments of that tweet but I didn’t see anyone provide an actual response:
Even if they count the "purchase" of a F2P game as a "sale" of a digital product in the second table, it doesn't seem like that would affect the first table which shows sales in yen, where for FY25 the totals were:
Physical: 125,106
Digital: 1,055, 688
So even if you want to argue the "# of units" metric is skewed in their data, it seems like the sales data by yen is not...or am I reading this chart wrong?

Again, this has not been announced. All rumors are pointing to them including a disc drive with the next console.

You mean the error that occurred and they admitted should not have happened? Cope harder, I guess. LINK

Xbox technology chief Scott Van Vliet says that while physical game discs are subject to licensing inspections, that shouldn’t have prevented them from working during this week’s outage, or while consoles are offline.
“We’re looking into reports that some players were unable to access games using discs as expected during the service interruption. Disc-based entitlement checks should not prevent players from accessing their games and this is by design,” said Van Vliet.
Just desperately clinging to anything, huh?

No you got it right, but that also isn't a 1:1 comparison. The problem with reading a chart in that way is it doesn't compare the sales of games that actually had a physical version. They are using false comparisons and wanting us all to accept them as true 1:1 comparisons.

Come on, man. If they were planning on including a disc drive, they would have announced it already to capitalize on people who are angry about Sony's decision.
The more likely scenario is that they had no intention of including a disc drive in Helix, but now that they see the backlash against Sony, they're trying to figure out how to include a disc drive while still making the numbers work w/ production costs vs. pricing. Still TBD if that's actually possible.

Why announce something no one questioned before Sony went stupid?

Everything I've seen indicates they were originally considering including a disc drive with the base model, but with the current costs they're considering adding a disc drive as a peripheral or to a higher tier model instead of part of the base model just like with the Series S/X. I've seen no indication that they are considering moving to digital-only games.

So what are examples of some data points when there's a true 1:1 comparison?

Hard to find, but they exist. I've already posted them in this thread so I'm not going to go through the work to find them again, but there are definitely people out there comparing sales of games that actually had a physical release by physical v digital. When you only look at games actually released with a physical edition, the numbers are closer to 40% physical.
The problem with looking at totals is the digital storefront is always going to have more selection than physical editions. Not only because of games that never released a physical edition, but also due to old games that no longer have physical prints available for purchase.

Why announce a feature that would give you a leg up on your competition to the segment that is passionate about disc-based gaming? Maybe because they need any positive publicity they can get with how poorly the XBOX division is performing and how hardware sales will all but die in Europe and the UK with the price hikes.

As mentioned above, XBOX needs any win it can get right now. If a disc drive is a certainty, (IMO) they would have announced it by now.

I just tried to skim through the entire thread. Are you referring to the data you posted from 2023?

The only one you need to look at is Sony's fiscal report I posted, it's a glaring truth that is just straight hard stats. It's a weird hill for older people to die on but like I said earlier social media isn't real life but an echo chamber of a small few.
The only games that sell even remotely decent physically are the big name first party title like Ghost of Yotei and even that was still only 34% physical as the biggest seller all year and biggest title on disc.
At the end of the day all the numbers point to the same thing, a very very small amount of physical sales still exist and that number continues to crater every single quarter. This is exactly why Rockstar went no disc for the biggest title of the decade, they don't care about the 30% that would have bought physical versus the savings not having to make one at all. Not enough demand to spend the money anymore.

None of this is true, and anyone claiming it is true will pretend they didn't claim this when Sony starts to go down in flames.

Ya I don't think Sony did this flippantly, they knew they'd catch a ton of shite especially after how they handled the Xbox attempt at this a decade ago.
They are clearly betting on most of their physical customers to begrudgingly adopt digital.
I think they are underestimating the % of defectors though.
Anyone still passionate about physical copies in 2026 is obviously pretty fanatical about it. People are pissed and I think a bigger chunk of them are leaving than Sony expects.
PlayStation can keep going just fine for the time being even if they lost them all, but much like the writing was on the wall 10-15 years ago that physical games were gonna go extinct I don't think it's a stretch to see the same sorta doom in store for dedicated gaming console hardware.
The entire big budget gaming industry is in major turmoil and if anything more dramatic changes are on the horizon. Cloud based streaming, AI, whatever. I just think the odds of people lining up at Wal Mart to buy a PS9 or whatever in a few decades is low.

Theyre going to skew these numbers however they want to
Like including digital only releases in the total number counted, disregarding how games like RE9 and Clair Obscur sold out of physical copies immediately.
From what I can gather trying my best to be objective about all data I can find physically still accounts for 25-30% of console sales.
Thats a lot to just cut off and assume theyll all just cave to you. Some will for sure but im interested to see how many, especially when the ps6 is going to be at least 1000$. Youre not quite at gaming pc range yet but youre getting damn close.

Take-Two Boss Defends No Disc Version of GTA 6, Equates Physical Releases to Vinyl Records
"Our business is well over 90% digitally distributed," Zelnick said. "It's already a digital business. So in certain instances, especially if it's a big game, discs just — and note I said discs — don't really make sense for the consumer."
"Also, most instances you have to register online to play anyhow. So if you're already connected, who cares if you download digitally? It's all the same and it's much more convenient."
"So that's where the world is going in our opinion and I think Sony understands that. We certainly understand that. It doesn't mean that we won't have physical additions now and then, I'm sure we will in the same way that there’s still vinyl in the recorded music business. But in other instances, it just won't make sense."

I really don't give a frick what some corporate douchebag like Zelnick thinks about the issue. He's a fricking lawyer by trade and has never programmed a day in his life, I doubt he has ever even owned a console gaming system.
WTF does this dude know about what gamers want or not?
It's flat out cheaper for the industry to do digital distribution and they make more money because there will no longer be a secondary market for the games.
Then the cost of the games must go down, right? I mean they are moaking more money with no secondary sales and the distribution is cheaper? Fat chance.
Just because he is aligned with the bean counters within Sony, isn't really any surprise.

No prices will not go down.
I can go to Amazon right now and buy a physical copy of god of war ragnorak for 44$ Ghost of Yotei for 55$ etc etc
This is why Sony has to do sales on their digital store, it’s the pressure from this market. Idk how some people are so fricking retarded they just mouth breath “muh I only buy digital le boomer lulz” as if they have no understanding of the law of secondary consequences
Once Sony has that totally walled in garden you’ll never see a game on sale again
Not to mention they seem totally cool with culling a 6 billion a dollar a year industry (secondhand games market stores) for what? So Sony can frick them in the arse? It’s just such a weird thing to me.

Sony has said they're exploring having retailers sell "code in a box" physical editions, so there's a chance games won't be sold exclusively on the PS store.

That's just ignorant fear mongering anyways, games are always on sale everywhere for all of history that isn't changing because it's digital only. Absurd to even think that.
Steam has a massive digital only monopoly on the entire PC segment and its sales are massive and frequent.
