People love to act like PC is this giant open market for games but let’s be real here, Steam has a de facto monopoly thanks to their robust and mature platform, their great developer treatment, their elite service, generous return policy, and a host of other benefits. Their only real competitor is GOG thanks to the no-DRM niche. Despite being Steam’s closest competitor, GOG still only has 12,000 games compared to Steam’s 130,000. People only have Epic Launcher to get the free monthly games and to play Fortnite - nobody actually buys games off of there.
You just described 3 competing storefronts. Even if one storefront is better at some things than the others, that is still competition. You just described how these storefronts carved out a market due to competition with each other.
Now, on the upcoming XBOX Helix console, people will be able to run PC games. Thus, even if XBOX decides to ditch physical discs, it will have access to those storefronts.

Steam lets retailers sell game codes, however, and that is the kicker. A game can be $29.99 on Steam but code resellers can have the game (gray market or otherwise) for a fraction of that. That’s what Sony is going to have to do - let Walmart, Amazon, Best Buy, etc sell game codes.
This is already a thing.
quote:
In the end, 90% of console gamers do not give a shite about this at all though, so Sony may not care about the PC attrition
Time will tell.

No it’s not. Sony hasn’t let retailers sell PlayStation game codes since before Covid

Interesting. It's a thing for Nintendo and XBOX. I just assumed PS was the same. I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

It should be.

One thing I hadn't quite realized the scope of is how badly game sales in general are down on PS5.
The PS5 essentially matched the PS4 in terms of overall hardware sales over its life cycle (92 millions vs 95 million at the last comparable point) but it has sold way less overall games.
Some of this is probably due to the live service push, lotta wasted time and effort that resulted in less "big" games being released, but even the "big" games that did come out sold way less vs. their comparable PS4 counterparts.
Sony's revenues have stayed up thanks to increased micro transactions, DLC, and PS+ subscriptions.

That's essentially what they were saying when they mentioned "only" 7 games sold more than 100,000 physical copies. It isn't because gamers aren't interested in buying physical copies, it's because gamers aren't buying those games.

Sony CFO Lin Tao says they are talking to retailers with how to move forward with 'code in a box' versions of games:
“For the last 30 years we have been selling PlayStation and retail partners have always been important to us.
With the completion of disc production we communicated this at an early stage, so that we have enough time to be able to listen to various partners’ voices.
In North America this has already happened, but without discs in the package there’s a code included, that’s how they sell in North America.”
Sony says it’s been talking to retailers about its disc-free future, suggests US retailers may still sell codes in a box

After Almost One Month, Sony Finally Responds To Disc Controversy: "It's Not Just For PlayStation"
yikes, that's the exact reason to move to PC

Yep. A not insignificant part of the player base plays the same game or games year over year. It isnt like the old days where people beat a game and buy a new one.
Fortnite/nba 2k/madden/fifa/call of duty all have year round seasons and people just buy the new one when it comes out. No need to ever buy multiple games.

The numbers speak for themselves. Even with the option to buy physical discs almost 90% of gamers choose digital. Maybe 3% refuse to buy digital and a lot of those probably have limited internet data or slow internet.
As the xbox outage showed earlier this month, even owning physical discs doesnt mean you can play your games without the servers approval, so whats the point?

The misleading numbers definitely do.

This isn't what the data shows at all. They're gaslighting you with "digital v physical" total sales while not doing an apples to apples comparison. When comparing sales of games that actually have a physical edition, the numbers are much closer. Comparing sales of digital games that don't offer a physical version (or are old and no longer have a physical version on the market) to physical games sales is a comparison only fools believe is valid.

I mean, it tells the story that people will continue to buy digital games if that’s all that is available and debunks the theory that the decision is going to kill gaming

It may tell that story, but it certainly does not tell the story that "people will keep buying games on Playstation." Moving away from physical discs makes Playstation the worst option available.

Xbox isnt gonna have discs either and 99% of pc sales are digital. Acting like this is a Playstation thing is mind-boggling
next xbox dropping disc drive

This does not appear to be accurate. Your IGN link has been cooperated by no one. In fact, the direct opposite is being reported and rumored currently. XBox has made no indications one way or the other.

True. The major difference here is there are competing game stores on PC.
It's like you guys are incapable of seeing reality.

Besides the whole thing where they are trying to allow people to convert their series X discs to digital? You think they are doing that because they are gonna still be able to use those discs on the new xbox?

You don't understand what you've read about this. Very sad. They aren't getting rid of the discs. They're giving people the digital rights to games they purchase on discs. This is an addition, not a subtraction. What you're talking about is absolutely an indicator that XBOX will continue supporting discs.
Meanwhile, over at Playstation:
