Yes the whole "only 7 games!" crap is misleading as hell because there's only been about NINE total "major" games released so far this year. The number is far more damning about the lack of releases in general than it is physical games, but it's being spun by pro-Sony websites as propaganda.
The % of physical sales is still robust enough to support and still profitable, Sony just feels they are now in a position where they can strong arm these people into digital now against their will without the price to pay that XBox One did at the time.

It's clear they didn't think they'd get the pushback they've gotten on this. They honestly thought the PS-friendly gaming media running point for them would put an end to it.

I said this in a thread back in April when digital-only rumors were going about PS6. I buy almost everything physically on consoles. I do not like buying digital content for Nintendo, PS, etc, because they have shown that they care nothing for preservation and are happy to remove your access to digital storefronts once they're old enough.
I will not buy a Playstation console that doesn't let me play physical games.
Wild how much cover Sony is getting for this.

At the end of the day physical sales are so low percentage and cost too much to make that it just isn't feasible.
Games have become so expensive to develop with studios closing in record numbers over and over again you have to find a way to recoup more profit to stay afloat.
Like I posted earlier in the thread, 2025 Sony estimated 60-75 million physical copies sold, at an average of $3 lost per sale to create the physical editions, that's $180M-225M lost.
It's also rapidly shrinking more and more each quarter, Q4 2025 had the lowest physical sales on record at just 15%. Multiplatform yearly games have the lowest physical sales rate, with games like Madden and FIFA the top two EA Sports games, selling at just a 12% physical copy rate. The lowest by far is EA CFB 26 at just 5% physical sales on PS5.
Xbox actually sells less physical by a large margin than Sony does with PS.
People can try to spin it all they want, but this is the future and why PS/Xbox/Rockstar are going fully digital. It just doesn't make sense to lose hundreds of millions per year to make physical when sales are that low and only trending lower.

US physical game sales hit a ~30-year low of ~$1.5 billion in 2025 (down 11% YoY)
Digital now dominates: ~76%+ of US units (as of earlier data, and rising); Xbox ~90% digital, PlayStation ~78–85% digital (peak quarters higher), Nintendo Switch more balanced (~53% digital) but still majority digital.

Nope. Every time a news article comes out and tries to make this claim, it is completely dismantled. The data simply doss not support your statement.

You can be in denial all you want, I will go with AI that knows the truth without emotion.
Numbers are the numbers.
Numbers are the numbers.

Living in denial won't get your physical media back with no sales. You can cry all you want on the internet though.

Keep in mind here the 2025 Sony numbers are directly from Sony's earnings report and are 100% accurate. You can view them yourself at any time. FY24 is almost as bad as 25 and there is no debate or debunking those numbers, period.

quote:
The ESA reported that around 76% of US game unit sales were already digital back in 2022, and the share has kept climbing since.
On PlayStation, Sony reported that 85% of full-game sales were digital in a peak quarter of its 2025 financial year, with the full-year digital download ratio averaging around 78%.
Xbox is even further along: roughly 9 in 10 Xbox full-game purchases are digital, and about two-thirds of Xbox Series consoles sold in the US in 2025 had no disc drive at all.

Alanah Pearce reports that Sony introduced its strictest social media guidelines ever ahead of the controversial PlayStation disc announcement.
Pearce said in a recent video that people working at PlayStation first-party studios told her Sony expected a major backlash before making the announcement.
According to Pearce:
"Sony already knew everyone would be pissed off—they knew this. People working within PlayStation first-party studios told me Sony had the strictest social media guidelines for this particular thing they've ever seen issued."
She explained that Sony regularly gives employees guidance on what they can and can't say publicly.
Pearce said she received similar instructions while working on God of War, but described these new guidelines as far more restrictive than anything she had previously experienced.
"But in this instance, it’s apparently the strictest the employees I spoke to have ever seen regarding public communications. They would only have done this if they knew it was going to be an enormous PR issue. This is no surprise to them.”"

Meanwhile, over here in reality:
I realize "Black Leg Sanji" is a huge gaming force though.
