I would go for a 285 if you want that performance range.

So the 285 is a pretty good card. About 10% less performance than the 280x. Basically 280 performance. But with the Sapphire Compact version, makes for a pretty good SFF build:

They just need that little bump to increase single core IPC which is important for gaming.
I don't really know what to change in the BIOS to adjust voltage, it's offset by default and I can change that but I can't find a guide showing exactly what I need to change and what value to change it to.

Yeah the 285s are great. I'm buying an iTX version when released on NewEgg. Looks like they beat up on 770s when OC'd in most games.

Well shtt, wasn't there last night.
I love everything iTX and that card will fit perfect in my bedroom SteamBox. I would have purchased another 290 for cheap on eBay but not purchasing another SFX PSU to drive the Islands; the current 450W SFX PSU just won't do.
The 285 in game and synthetic benchmarks i've read to this point have been impressive.

still putting the finishing touches on my potential build
anyone have tool recommendations?
I think I have everything I need, but I've seen some PC repair toolkits for like 15 bucks, dont know if it would be worth it

Everything you ordered should be all you need. The tool kits may come with more screws, standoffs, jumpers, etc., but you shouldn't need that.

I got some rosewill toolkit about 2 years ago for really cheap that I still use. I mainly use the screwdriver

I think that's the one i saw on amazon. I was thinking about getting it

Looks like a decent kit. I would agree that some zip ties would be probably the most useful "extra" you could buy, as well as some good thermal compound.
I've never used those grounding wrist straps. Not to say they are unnecessary; I've just never had any issues. Could be the humidity of Louisiana in general.

So AMD has a 285X coming to market within the next few weeks. The Tonga(sp?) chipset looks great for iTX rigs, might wait on this card since it should beat or trade punches with 7970/280X cards while at a lower TDP.
