I'm wanting to upgrade my MB, CPU, and GPU. Key considerations - value, relevancy, and overclocking capabilities. I do not plan on upgrading my monitor in the near future, much to bruce's dismay.
Here's what I'm looking at:
CPU - AMD FX-8320
MB - MSI 990FX
GPU - ASUS R9 280X
Value: Pretty good picks for the price range. Nitpicks would be that this ASRock Fatal1ty has a few more extra features for the same price without the need for a rebate.
And you can save $30 on the 280x by going with the HIS IceQ (I own this one so I can vouch for its greatness. Unlocked voltage, dual bios, reference design, etc.) But if you don't like the look, the ASUS is good too.
Relevance: The FX CPUs are getting kind of dated in comparison to higher-end GPUs and more demanding games. The 8320 shouldn't be a bottleneck for a 280x, but if you crossfire one day, the GPU power might be held back. You can ask Bruce about his experience with crossfire 7950s paired with an 8350, particularly in more CPU-demanding games like multiplayer BF3/4. There's always the Intel option, but it will cost you another $100 or so (for the i5-4690k and a Z97 board).
Overclocking: 8320 will do 4.0GHz without any voltage changes or a need for significant cooling. So there's some headroom. The 280x will overclock easily as well.

So let's talk Z97 with the same criteria. If I go that route, how does the Asus Z97-A fit my needs?
Eta: which means I probably need to look at cases too. This is getting fun.

The ASUS would be fine, as would a similarly priced MSI, Asrock, or Gigabyte. I think Tom's did a comparison on those last month.

That's one of the resources I'm using for manufacturers. But I don't plan to crossfire, so going intel may not be important for me. Still thinking through everything.

Take the OT tech topics add all the closet tech experts and BOOM you have the tech board.

Are you idiots really going to try to measure epeens with the tech board?
Its not a computer board. Its a Tech Board.
I enjoy talking gaming consoles and master race stuff here and I enjoy talking tech there. No reason to make fun or look down your noses.
Some of us like helping out others. If you don't like the board don't visit it and definitely don't go trolling.
