I say stick with a GTX 680/770 or bump up to a GTX 780. Like ILikeLSUToo stated, AMD cards are out of reach at this point.
If you do decide to go cheaper, GTX 760 is almost the only other card out there.

IDK man, the eye candy and lighting is what sets PCs from consoles now, and resolution/fps also.
Saying that, ShadowFall looks awesome on my PS4 and looks like a PC title with NO "eye candy" and at a lower resolution/fps.

Yep, so his 1440p monitor and 60fps (for other titles) will be a significant improvement over console even with all the bells and whistles disabled, running at medium settings.

Well, its different when you are 2.5ft away vs 10-15ft away from the TV.
I know the reason my shtty PS4 games look decent is because the distance I set at. So if he has a "traditional" living/entertainment room set up, the resolution doesnt have as much impact as changing resolution on the desktop.
I know know you know this, im just kind of talking through it.

I've been itching to play DayZ since the mod came out and now the standalone is tempting me even more. Even though DayZ would be the reason I actually pull the trigger on a build, I would most definitely be playing other games as well.
I originally intended to buy both of the next gen consoles but now that I have a PS4 I'm considering using the money for the Xbone on a PC. Since Titanfall was announced for PC I don't have a reason to get a Xbone just yet. I started looking around at parts the other day and realized how little I know about PC gaming.
Edit: What does this mean? Google gave me nothing.

It has to do with Bitcoin/Litecoin and other cryptocurrencies -- It's profitable to use AMD GPUs (less so for NVidia GPUs) to mine for Scrypt-based cryptocurrency at the moment. If you have no idea what I'm talking about, the thing to take away is this: AMD GPUs are in high demand for uses other than gaming right now, so people (including retailers like NewEgg) are selling them at a big markup, some for over $100 more.

What would be some deciding factors to go with the 780 over 770? Would someone coming from console gaming even notice the difference between the two?

2400 cores and 3gb is more future proof.
Edt: Meaning the GTX 780 is more future proof than the GTX 770. Both are great choices, but that would be the difference with your application.

If you enjoy it as a hobby, probably, yes. It's a fairly narrow but highly competitive market, so there's always lots of new things just around the corner.
I buy things here and there throughout the year, which generally translates to a new build once per year or two. But some of us here enjoy the technology more than the actual gaming aspect of it, which is why we switch out hardware so much.

Just build multiple rigs unless you need funds. I find it really satisfying trying multiple cpu/gpu/mobo/ram and form factor combinations, they all perform different. Each combo feels like (because it is) a whole new experience.

Those with 8320/8350, do you guys seriously Stream with no lag? I don't believe TekSyn claiming it does x264 better than a 4930K.
If that is the case, I'll do a separate "streaming build".

yes, I can stream without lag, even on the Fast setting. BF4 I have to use faster.
