5800x3D w/ 6900XT and I’m having a hard time waiting another gen for mobo/cpu. Will most definitely get the 7990XTX if it’ll fit in my lian li and run on my 1200w power supply for a year until I go next gen cpu mobo w DDR5
If I hadn’t overpaid out the arse to build this pc February 2021 I’d probably do it

Are you actually playing anything right now that wants more than the 5800x3D can give it?

how long do you think this will last? i've never had a CPU this "powerful" before.

How do you mean?
Though, speaking of powerful:

idk. like... how "future-proof" is it.

Hard to say what the future will bring, but as a microcosm, in your current favorite game, your CPU is capable of giving you 264fps, while your GPU is only capable of giving you 95fps (seriously, turn on DLSS Quality if you haven't already, it's going to change your life...), while your current monitor appears to max out at 165fps.
So I would venture a guess that it's going to be good for quite some fricking time into the future

So much for all those rumors for weeks now that there is only an 8 core 3D model.

I mean, in theory, it makes sense. Each die needs its own cache, so it’s more cost effective to do cache stacking on skus with a single die. I’m curious to see what pricing on the two die skus looks like. Then again, current Zen sales are kinda shite because of the cost of motherboards and RAM, so AMD might be inclined to eat a bit of profit to get a surge of sales.

Because, I want an Oompa Loompa NOW!
I’m pretty heavily invested in AMD, it helps me cope a bit. It’s completely frivolous, I still dumb down my graphics and play fps games on my 1080p monitor for competitive advantage.
I play on a 240hz monitor so I need to match that in fps. I’d like to eventually get a 1440p monitor and get 240fps consistently. I know on my 4k TV my pc still struggles a bit on super heavy loads

My fan on my cooler that sits on mobo started going out on me last night. Tries to start. Then stops. Starts. Stops. Makes somewhat loud noise.
I'm assuming it's going bad and not a larger sign of power issue. Everything else running fine.
The cooler is about 8 years old along with mobo and processor.
Should I just bite the bullet and start my piecemeal upgrades?

Sounds like the fan bearing is gunked up. What kind of cooler, and what kind of fan, is it?
Posted on 12/4/22 at 11:18 am to Joshjrn
It's an older Cooler Master so it has the fan attached on side

Attached how? Most are either screwed, or more commonly back then, use a bracket. Can you find a link to the cooler?
Posted on 12/4/22 at 11:56 am to Joshjrn
It's a bracket. It can pop off

The I opened it up and removed fan and cooler to look at it.
The more concerning aspect is that my processor came out still pasted on bottom of cooler
Am I fricked

Yikes. For future reference, always twist the cooler first to break contact. If you pull straight up, it's highly likely the cpu will come out with it.
Too-late advice aside, look at your cpu and motherboard socket. Are there straight pins on the cpu and holes in the motherboard socket, or are there pins on the motherboard and contacts on the cpu?
Regardless, does everything still look relatively in place, or does anything look damaged? Feel free to take up close pictures of both and post them if you want to simplify things.
ETA: Your cpu and motherboard are probably fine, so relax. But we'll work through the process to make sure

So I examined everything. It looked fine. No pieces left in mobo. I took fan off. Reinstalled cooler. Planned on monitoring heat
Plugged in. Turned on but now monitor has no signal for some reason. Everything sounded and looked like it booted
