Just went from 60 to 144Hz a few months ago and was blown away.

Yeah, you can't go back, trust me, I just sold arguably the best 4K monitor on the market because 60Hz from 144Hz was just unbearable.

And we won't be seeing any 4K HDR 100Hz+ monitors this year it appears.

ETA: Make sure you go into Windows Display Settings and change your display adapter properties to 144Hz for Windows too, if you never did. I never knew about it for months when I first got mine.

I got that changed when installing....but i didnt realize the new cord needed to be used. I just used the same old one I was used too until a buddy came to double check my build haha.

PSU lacked 8-pin PCIe plugs or something?

Modular and I'm sure I had an extra PCIe plug at one time, but three moves later I couldn't find it so I had to order another one.

SCORE
27 169 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080(2x) and Intel Core i7-6850K
Graphics Score 44 656
Physics Score 18 602
Combined Score 8 370

LINK

Berfore upgrading

Old
16 603 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080(1x) and Intel Core i7-4790K
Graphics Score 22 208
Physics Score 11 928
Combined Score 7 204

One interesting thing is that my first 1080 wouldn't take the factory OC Mode setting without locking up my system, but with the STRIX MOBO and SLI I can now put both cards in OC mode.

Love it. We have soo many ppl using premium hardware on this board now. Just shows you how much better PC gaming is vs consoles since ppl are welling to shell out this money for upgrades.

Also DoUrden I do plan on posting my Firestrike runs in the benchmarks thread. Just have no access to my PC ATM. I came home to Thibodaux last Wednesday for the holidays and left my main PC in Corpus. Which I regret every second right now, but its not fun traveling with that damn Caselabs Merlin SM8 loaded with water filled rads, pumps and reservoir.

I did bring my PS4 and have laptops.. soo not too bad.

I just wish I had enough knowledge to do do what you and ILike do with the OCing, I've seen some scores with my same CPU and GPU configuration on 3DMark around 32K.

It's not hard, honestly. Google an overclocking guide for your motherboard. I bet at least someone has written a detailed listing of the various settings, best ones to use, what to disable, how far you can safely take them, etc. It just takes patience to mess with that stuff incrementally, reboot, run benches, rinse and repeat.

With the GPUs, same thing but way simpler.

Dude it is simple now... even clearing BIOS if you do have errors and unable to boot.

Just learn what each settings means. Remember every component has a relation to each other, direct or indirect. Meaning if you increase speed on this component be it RAM, IO, CPU or SB it might affect something else. So an example of this is RAM and CPU voltage. Since we do not have a NB anymore because Intel moved the memory controller onto the chip, you might need to increase CPU voltage depending on your RAM speed. Back in the day an adjustment in clocks and voltage on the North Bridge would be how you worked increasing RAM clocks but now you need to work with CPU voltage sometimes to achieve the RAM speeds you want.

Why do 3DMark scores vary so much, I can score 27000 or I can score 23000, I know some of it has to do with background processes and thinks like that. My GPU score seems to be rock solid almost all the time but my CPU score and combined score are all over the place.

Looks like I'm finally going to be joining the master race. I'm currently reading through ILike's guide but I was curious what the current price tiers are, if that makes sense. Like what can I expect to get for $600, $800, $1000, etc

For $600-$1000, expect a decent 1080p gaming PC.

You could put more into a GFX card if you want more, and obviously you can get the 6600k instead of the i5-6500, but this is similar to the build I did earlier this year:

FYI: Frys is having a massive motherboard after Christmas sale starting at 5 today:

Tons of MSI, Asus, and Gigabyte moboards X99, Z97, Z170 under $100

Thinking of picking up a Z97 ITX board for $33 for the HTPC build I've wanted to do.

Working on my OC

Firemark
28 360 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080(2x) and Intel Core i7-6850K
Graphics Score 44 800
Physics Score 19 300
Combined Score 9 305

LINK

Timespy
12 755 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080(2x) and Intel Core i7-6850K
Graphics Score 15 222
CPU Score 6 650
LINK

What I am learning is that the room temp and the CPU temp are my fluctuations, it I put my CPU fan on high and always I score better.

I'm sorry ILike but the coloring on the STRIX MOBO and GPU's are a big help in watching temps, I know you don't like neon. The X99 board makes it nice to mount the cooler since you no longer need a back plate.

If I put this system underwater I am sure I could get some great results.

I will not compete with two Tital X Pascals, some of the score I have seen on some systems reach 40K plus!

A 60% increase in performance isn't bad and I am happy with my system for now.

I don't know too much about OCing, but the lowest CPU temps possible will be at room temperature, right?

EDIT: My i5-6500 usually idles with the stock cooler with all cores around 26-27 degrees C, and the hottest I've seen it go is 57-58 degrees while playing Witcher 3 at 1080p max.

I am getting a Cryorig C7 to replace the stock cooler though because the mboard no longer reads the fan speed of the stock cooler anymore and I have to bypass the CPU fan speed error message in the bios for the computer to boot into Windows.

I'm glad you brought this up. CPU newb here. I have a 6700k just turned mine on and i'm at 20-25C. I've seen it get as high as 38C after a long gaming session. I only play overwatch though so i figure it shouldnt be running that hot. No OC whatsoever.

are those ROG ASUS 1080s?? I really like the ROG brand, bought the ASUS ROG HERO mobo without really looking into the x99 and I kinda regret it.
