Hey guys,

My nephew wants to build a gaming PC in the range of $1000 to $1500.

I know nothing about this. Could any of you guys give me any advice on setting up a build for him?

Thanks in advance.

Is he going to build it himself? Does he know how? How old is he?

We could give you a parts list inclusive of monitor, mouse, keyboard and send you on your merry way, but someone would have to know how to put the thing together.

He is 15, I have somebody who will put it together for him.

A parts list would be great, including monitor, mouse and keyboard.

Don't forget a copy of windows, I'm assuming you don't want to use other methods to obtain it.

I'll leave the monitor advice up to someone else, but this should be a good balanced 1080p/1440p build, in your price range.

EDIT: You probably could go with a cheaper motherboard, but in my personal experience, motherboards for some reason have given me a shitload of problems lately, so I didn't skimp on this choice for you.

Ok took some bios tweaking on the cpu fan but 1st boot into windows.

Firestrike out of the box no tweaks just new mobo, ram and cpu:

Old
16 603 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080(1x) and Intel Core i7-4790K
Graphics Score 22 208
Physics Score 11 928
Combined Score 7 204
LINK

New
18 055 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080(1x) and Intel Core i7-6850K
Graphics Score 22 061
Physics Score 17 071
Combined Score 7 935
LINK

Time to swap the old 1080 for the OG version, test and then use them both, and after that I get to play with OC'ing, providing something doesn't go horribly wrong which isn't out of the question with my past experience.

With the new 1080:
18 657 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080(1x) and Intel Core i7-6850K
Graphics Score 23 186
Physics Score 17 131
Combined Score 8 004
LINK

Preset "gaming" OC in the bios for the CPU:
18 994 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080(1x) and Intel Core i7-6850K
Graphics Score 22 841
Physics Score 18 266
Combined Score 8 622
LINK

OC mode with the 1080:
19 165 with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080(1x) and Intel Core i7-6850K
Graphics Score 23 201
Physics Score 18 265
Combined Score 8 593
LINK

Have to wait for my power connectors to come in to add the 2nd 1080 back into the computer.

I've been out of some of these threads but didn't realize you jumped up to 2011.

Just make sure you OC the Turbo if you run dynamic to at a min 4.3GHz. If not if will almost be a wash with the 4970K in gaming.

Also I stopped using dynamic Turbo/Boost functions in desktops way back just to decrease response time. So if you have a 6850K that can hit 4.4 @ 1.385V go for it. Anything over I would say hold off on Fixed mode due to hardware degradation. Not so much on the CPU over such a short 2-3yr duration but the motherboard. The board has a lot more individual components being affected by this change. This keeps those components at a high stress state during operation which increases the risk of failure. So increasing the risk of failure on each individual component across all components may not be worth the future headache.

Proceed with caution if you go over 1.4V+ to achieve that 4.3/4.4 OC.

First night on it, and not testing anything over stock OC right now, hell I don't even have my fron't panel controls, dvd drive, or 2nd ssd plugged in yet. I will get the 2nd 1080 installed and then fix the rest. I am very noy knowledgeable when it come to OC'ing so it takes me a while to work up the courage to risk a machine with this price tag.

You aren't running 4 sticks? You will get a bottleneck here.

Run 4 sticks, the CPU and chipset are Quad-Channel.

It has always been the consensus on here the 16 gigs were enough, I will buy the extra if it will help me.

Told you I know enough to get into trouble with this stuff, but I am learning, I ordered two more sticks.

Currently on the hunt for a new personal PC with a HQ series + 1060. The Razer Blade is out the question based on that shtty keyboard and me hating Razer products. Leaving me with only one real option, waiting on a Dell XPS 15 refresh.

So noticed something this morning in a TweakTown article.
quote:

Dell's new XPS 9650 sports a 15-inch 4K display, Intel's new Kaby Lake-based processor (Core i3-7100HQ, Core i5-7300HQ, or Core i7-7700HQ), an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 with up to 4GB of RAM, and I'm sure plenty of storage options, USB 3.0 connectivity, and more

We might have a Quad-Core i3 in mobile market. I believe this would be a first. After doing a little research this is confirm, nothing on the market. Previously the suffixes represented the details below.

U Series = 2C/4T Dual Core + Hypethreading for i3, i5, i7 chips. Giving you 2 physical cores and 2 logical cores.

HQ Series = 4C/4T Quad Core /no HT for i5 and 4C/8T Quad Core + Hyperthreading for the i7.

So kinda cool and weird that we might see a Quad Core i3 on the mobile market before desktop.

Or, the definition of HQ was written based on the current offerings only, and subject to change. The i3 could end up being a 2C/2T + hyperthreading just like a desktop i3, which would fall in line with the other HQ CPUs following the "desktop" definition of i5s and i7s. But then again, Intel does weird things with mobile CPUs, like the U-series i5s and i7s are both dual-core with hyperthreading, very small performance difference. i3 HQ might be an underclocked i5 HQ.
