IT people:
Does the strata IT fundamentals certification have any real value? Or is it like A+? good to have but not really needed often times.

I would stay away from that chip for gaming. The x100 series line has poor gaming performance and many i3 will outperform it
For $80 I don't see how you can beat it

In Gaming Shoot-Out: 18 CPUs And APUs Under $200, Benchmarked (see the link below), the Phenom II X4 made a significant comeback compared to its competition, since many of the newer games we tested are able to utilize multiple threads. Sporting 6 MB of L3 cache and an unlocked ratio multiplier, AMD's Phenom II X4 965 is a solid performer at its stock clock rates, and it has some room to scale up with overclocking, too. Thanks to the long life of AMD's Socket AM3/AM3+ interface, you can buy this chip today and then upgrade to an FX model down the road (though we don't really see much reason to do so now, based on the FX's gaming performance).

stout explain to me why people just don't go with amd these days.

Because Intel has better high end chips. The only AMD chip comparable right now is the FX-8350 and it's about on par with the i5-3570K. They are both within the same price and about the same performance gaming wise. I rolled with the 8350 because it's 8 core and better suited for stuff I do a lot like rendering in photoshop, Sony Vegas, Blender, etc.
You can build a good budget rig with AMD. Intel chips aren't only more expensive but the motherboards cost more for the same features you can get on an AMD board.
If you have the money and aren't an AMD fanboy like me, then Intel is going to give you the best perfromance.
That being said, I have never had an issue running any game I want to play on my currecnt build or my first one that had an FX-6200 in it.

There are a handful of games where the 3570k outperforms the 8350 but they are the same for most. Honestly, if I built again I would get the 8350 and save the $30 or whatever the difference is plus save more on the mobo.

Now I feel like a jackass, I didn't know what you were talking about. I think I am going to start working on those and trying to volunteer some time to get some experience. Hopefully from there I can get a job somewhere and stop being poor

Figure out whats "most fun" and roll with it
fair warning tho..im 30 with a college degree and been doin this shite half my life and I still dont know whats most fun for me
hardware, networking, databases and sql, info sec, sys admin... its all interesting but not interesting enough for me to specialize
those 3 I mentioned carry good weight in the entry level it world for sure. Strata may not be useless, but ive never heard of it

Did you get yours in comp sci?
Posted on 6/22/13 at 2:57 pm to bluebarracuda
Nah..started in cs. Realized I hated programming. Switched to isds in the business college.

sounds like some BS cert you have to take to get an online degree from WGU or some place similar.
CompTIA

A+ only if you have zero experience. itll run you about $500 to get (two tests now) and expires every 2 years or something ridiculous.

If you learn to program, and with my 3D modeling and photoshop skills, we could make some apps/games. I've always wanted to but don't know anyone good enough with c++ or anything.

It's one of those comptia certifications. The sample questions were very easy and seemed like a useless certification. I think a+ is cheaper than that but there are 2 tests for it.
Posted on 6/22/13 at 3:18 pm to Mr Gardoki
oh ok i see it now. yeah dont bother. WAY too simple. it really is one of those exams used by online tech universities (not that its a bad thing, WGU uses M$ and Cisco exams) but thats too basic to be of any value to a resume

I know a guy that skipped CS in college and all the bullshite. He just went and got Windows Certified and makes bank working for Dell.
Don't ask me what all certificates he holds because it's quite a few but everytime he gets another cert in a different area he gets a damn raise.
