Thanks for all the suggestions, guys.
I will probably wait a little while longer to see what these new GPUs can do, or build a system with a budget GPU and everything else up to date and upgrade that final part down the road.

Not a bad way to do it. Just do i5 Skylake, fast DDR4, and a motherboard with an M.2 slot supporting PCIe x4. That's about as future-proof as you'll get (but there's really no such thing). Maybe someone here has a cheap used card to sell you (Coyote still offering his 780 Tis, but not exactly budget cards).
If you're going to wait for Pascal/Polaris, I advise getting the flagship. No point in waiting for the next crop of cards if you're just going to grab a cheaper cut-down version of the new architecture, especially if you're trying to avoid upgrades for a while. This is particularly applicable to NVIDIA as of late. My only regret with my GTX 980s is that I didn't get the 980 Tis. But the 980 Ti was released 9 months later, so it would've been a long wait. It's an endless cycle.

Wasn't sure whether to go 6600k or 6700k, but as I understand it, either of these CPU's should be all I'll need for quite a few years.

Was looking at 16GB of DDR4. It doesn't cost much extra to go from 8 to 16 looking at PCPartPicker, so I figure why not?

TBH, not sure what all of that is for. Looking at the MSI Z170 mobo right now.

I was looking into the 750ti. I can get by playing some older games like Skyrim, Deus Ex HR, Dishonored GOTY, New Vegas, etc for the time being. I'm currently outside the States (6 weeks in Abu Dhabi). I'll start looking into things when I get back. If I can get a used one off the GB, that would be perfect.
As for future proofing, I don't really feel the need to pump all the graphics options to ultra, performance is what I care about the most. If that means kicking down settings from ultra to high to maintain a superior framerate, I'll do it. I think how I've got things planned will be able to handle that for many years.

Definitely, I know it's going to be expense, won't be half-assing it. Again, thanks for all your help.

Up to you. 6700K has a higher base clock, but I wouldn't say it's worth another $100+. The hyperthreading won't be much use to you unless you use video editing programs and/or other workstation tasks that take advantage of it. In deciding, I would focus more on what you intend to use it for and what you may end up using it for, rather than worrying about future game requirements.

And M.2 slot is a form factor for storage devices. M.2 slots that interface with PCI Express will accommodate super-fast SSDs like the Samsung 950 Pro. It's several times faster than 2.5" SSDs. They're a bit pricey but will come down in due time.
Think about the motherboard features you want and don't go overboard on cost.

I'm going to need to do some more research I guess. Fortunately I've got plenty of time offshore coming up.

Sending my 390X back to Amazon and going to get either an R9 Nano for the HTPC or a 980Ti.

Nano!
Has anyone upgraded from FreeNAS 9.2 to 9.3? I can't get 9.3 to boot from a USB.

You would go Nano over a 980Ti?
AMD over NVIDIA?

I did.
His password is #Nvidia, pretty easy.

How much longer do I have to do the windows 10 upgrade?

Unless Microsoft has extended it, the deadline is a year from launch, so sometime in July this year.
Posted on 1/18/16 at 3:57 pm to ILikeLSUToo
I keep saying I will get around to it

An upgrade might be underway..

I can't remember the last time I've seen an empty kitchen sink in my house.
I see titan x backplates, indicating you either just now put some 980 Tis under water, or you already did some time ago. If the latter, what could you possibly be upgrading?
So many things I want to upgrade. My daughter will be out of daycare in May and starting Kindergarten in August. A month after that, both cars will be paid off. That'll be nearly $1300 a month in bills eliminated at once. Obviously the responsible thing to do is save some for a couple of months and then immediately blow through it all.
By the end of the year, I may upgrade to whatever Intel's tick or refresh is at that time, which will be a $600+ upgrade by itself. Plus, I'll need a pair of flagship cards and some goddamn bitch-arse waterblocks-- so that's what, another $1500. And of course, a freesync/gsync monitor (depending on who's winning the GPU war that week). And it wouldn't be right to keep using this lame SATA SSD after those upgrades, either.

Spreading out the 980Tis from PCIx16 3.0 1 and 2 to 1 and 3. Putting a PCIe expansion card with M.2 slot for this 950 Pro . I've had it for over a month but never could install because still on X79.
Honestly just bored and i'm having trouble with my FreeNAS server and 9.3. That is usually the hardware being upgrading and tinkered with but i'm having serious issues even getting the fckker to boot at the moment.

The SO is paying off her car this year and my ride is dunzo next year. Can not wait to get that monkey off our backs.
Crazy part, I commute a long ways so honestly we will be in the market for another vehicle again next year.

So if I were to get a 1440p monitor, because FLYAU may sell me his, what am I looking at with a 770? Could I keep it on high settings if I just cap it at 30fps?
