Actually got a few things accomplished last night. Having read you take an XP hit for lower level quests, I hurried up and ran to see the witch. A level 5 quest and I was lvl 7. Even at 7 I had a bit of a tough time. Especially with that damn gargoyle.
Went from high 7 to 9 by the time we left the elven ruins.
Then I got my arse kicked by the lvl 12 wraiths by the exit. I honestly think they are trolling us with the location of easy content next to instant death content.

If you had managed to survive the wraiths you would have found a level 15 noonwraith on that building you were heading towards as well. Posted on 6/10/15 at 10:16 am to auyushu
I didn't realize that one monster in one area might have a higher level than the same monster in another area.
Was killing downers easily and saw a pack of them. Ran over to kick their arse not realizing they were level 9 downers as opposed to lower levels.
Same happened with those wraiths. I just killed a pack of wraiths in the dungeon and didn't notice the ones outside were level 12.

There is some high level Griffin or Basilisk in Velon that has wrecked my shite a couple of times. He is aggressive and just swooped down on me while I was on a horse. I wasn't even made. It was hilarious.

He got me too. knocked about 85% of my HP in one hit, then his poison killed me. That whole are was nothing but RUN RUN RUN RUN away!

Yeah, most of that area where you pop out after the caves with Keira is very high level compared to where you are at the time. I think they mean for you to just jump on that boat outside the cave when you are done. Most of the other areas with crazy high level stuff has them off in the corners of map sections rather than in the middle at least though.
There is a level 30something Basilisk just northwest of Oxenfurt on the landmass you start on in Velen though that kinda surprised me when I ran into it at like 22-24 while clearing out some ? areas. Wasn't really a big issue killing it at that point, but I could imagine running into it at level 7 and being like WTF!

So I played for about 30 minutes last night and couldn't really get into it...is it a game that gets better as far as open world and stuff? The controls and environment interaction just seem really clunky to me.

30 minutes isn't enough to tell you anything from a game this big, but yes it gets better.
The controls and combat are kinda clunky, but you get used to them. Menus are terrible though. Assuming you are playing on the PS4, make sure you learn how to hold down the touchpad to get into your inventory and swipe it up or down to access the map. This saves a lot of time. Not sure if there is equivalent for PC/Xbone.
Also, you can select meditate from the same menu you use to select signs.

Explore Velen a little bit when you get there. If you aren't having fun by then, you can probably quit.

Nah, once he gets out ahead of the leveling curve. It sucks at first because everything is 2-4 lvls higher than you.

Dourden did a relatively fast playthrough of the main story and is now going back and doing a completionist run-through.
I'm doing a completionist run-through (except for Gwent) right now. I'm at 80+ hrs and I honestly have no idea how much story is left.
